- Two volumes of diaries, including clippings of photomechanical illustrations from tourist guides, as well as photographs, and ephemera documenting the Morris family trip to Western Canada and Washington state in Summer 1921. Entries dated July 2-August 5 describe the trip from Philadelphia to Western Canada and then Washington state, including travels through Niagara Falls and the Great Lakes as well as stays at “de-luxe” hotels and horseback, canoe, and hiking excursions, often to glaciers. Morris also describes sightseeing visits. She discusses a Michigan copper mine; Lake Louise, Paradise and Yoho Valley, Sulphur Mountain, and Moraine Lake in the Valley of the Ten Peaks (Canadian Rockies and Banff); Emerald Lake and Victoria (B.C.); and Puget Sound, Seattle, and Mt. Ranier National Park (Washington). Morris's entries also make mention of a disappointing auto tour on the Malahat Drive; vacationing with her Aunt Elizabeth Morris, including souvenir shopping; her encounters with wildlife, rainy weather, and numerous mosquitoes; travel mishaps, including trail horses running off in the Yoho Valley and an excursion train derailment near Albert Canyon (B.C.). Morris' wife Jane Rhoads Morris stands in the center wearing a long dress and a shawl. The two women next to her wear white blouses, black skirts, and hats. The woman on the right wears a white dress. A small black dog stands in front of the women. David Deshler built the original four-room summer cottage on this Germantown lot in 1752, adding the three-story front addition in 1772. The house was sold to Col. Isaac Franks in 1792 after Deshler’s death. President George Washington rented the home for the duration of the yellow fever epidemic of 1793 and the summer of 1794. Elliston and John Perot purchased the house in 1804, selling it to Elliston’s son-in-law Samuel B. Morris after his death in 1834. The house stayed in the possession of the Morris family for over a century, when Elliston P. Morris donated the house to the National Parks Service in 1948. Morris Jr. and Marriott C. Morris Jr. The wear sailor suits, and one boy wears a hat. A dog stands in the sand close to the water. The Beach House is visible in the far distance. Robert Stockton bought the land of what would become Sea Girt in 1853. After his death in 1866, developers bought the land and in 1875 the Sea Girt Land and Improvement Company took over Stockton’s old mansion, added wings to either side, and renamed it the Beach House. The Beach House was a popular hotel for many years, reopening in 1920 as Stockton Hotel. Elliston Perot Morris bought property in Sea Girt, N.J. in 1875, where he built the summer home Avocado after designs by Quaker architect Hibberd Yarnall. Morris left Avocado, named after a Perot family estate in Bermuda, to his daughter Elizabeth Canby Morris in his will. It was sold in 1947 after her death. The name changed in 1907 to the Germantown Boys’ Club after joining ranks with the Boys and Girls Clubs of America. Marriott Canby Morris served as the president of the club in the first decade of the 1900s. Wildwood began developing as a coastal resort town in the 1890s, growing dramatically in popularity in the 1950s.
