Smith, known as an eccentric, never married and traveled widely from the mid to late 19th century. Between 1859 and 1886, she resided in Washington, D.C (1859-1861) and traveled to Europe (1860-1870; 1874-1876; 1880-1886), including the British Isles, Rome, Venice, Paris and St. Petersburg. She was also an autograph collector, author, poet, and socialite. Smith died and was buried in London in November 1886. Her estate was valued at over $30,000 and she left several bequests, including to the Library Company, Historical Society of Pennsylvania, and friends throughout the East coast of the United States, Europe, and Russia.

- Membership certificate containing four vignettes depicting people interacting with animals. Shows a deer carcuss dropped in the street from the back of a speeding game wagon; a dog lying, on guard, next to a baby sleeping in a cradle; a soldier's horse nuzzling its fallen rider; and a woman feeding seed to fowls in a pasture. Scroll, floral, and horticultural elements border the text and vignettes. Also contains the seal of the society, the Pennsylvania coat of arms, and the motto "The Merciful Man Regardeth the Life of his Beast." Society seal shows an angel raising her hand in protest of a wagon driver beating his work house. The PSPCA was organized by Philadelphia businessman Colonel M. Richards Mucklé in 1867 and incorporated in 1868. Illustrations depict seasonal, genre and landscape scenes, including a man fishing (July), a couple canoeing (August), ducks on promenade down a dirt path (September), a waterfall and winter scene near a homestead (October and November), and deers in a snow-covered forest (December). Promotional text describes the superiority of the McCormick mowers based on "Durability. Jersey Wash Day, also known as Salt Water Day or Ocean Day, was an annual event held the second Saturday of August near Wreck Pond in Sea Girt. Farmers living twenty to thirty miles from Sea Girt came to the sea to spend a day bathing and celebrating.
