Grass, twigs, and bushes surround the figures. Boell, a French-born lithographer, worked in New York 1854-1858 before relocating to Philadelphia, where he was active until the 1880s. Shows the figure of Columbia, attired in a toga, American flag, and laurel wreath, with a broken shackle under her foot as she stands on a pedestal. She holds a sword in one hand beside an American eagle perched on a shield and a laurel wreath in the other in front of a sculpted bust of George Washington. The bust rests on a pedestal adorned with a fasces. A paint palette and brushes, compass, rolls of paper, and a banner reading "Encourage American Arts" rests at the feet of Columbia. - Fair certificate containing vignettes and scenes related to agriculture, horticulture, and industrial arts. At the top, a female allegorical figure, sits upon a rug-covered throne with her arms outstretched. She is flanked by symbols of agriculture, including wheat, farm produce, and livestock. On the sides, vignettes depict tools and products of the book arts and fine arts, a threshing machine, a steam locomotive, and stems of flowers, and a grape vine. At the bottom, a historical scene of Egyptians slaves, in front of the pyramids and under the view of an overseer, cutting wheat with sickles is contrasted to a farmer harvesting his field with a horse-drawn reaper. The Pennsylvania State Agricultural Society was founded in 1851 by representatives from 50 counties with the object to "foster and improve agriculture, horticulture, and the domestic and household arts." - Confirmation and Holy Communion certificate containing an interior view of the Roman Catholic church built in 1840 after designs by architect Eugene Napoleon Le Brun. View looks toward the nave of the ornately decorated church and shows boys and girls kneeling in a long row in front of the chancel rail during their Holy Communion ceremony. Two priests flank the bishop as he addresses the children from within the chancel. Murals and statuary of religious icons and angels adorn the sanctuary, frescoed ceiling, and alcoves of the church. - Illustration printed on upper half of stationery paper pasted onto front flyleaf of magazine volume. Includes hand-written form letter under the illustration signed by William M. Huddy and P. S. Duval outlining prices of "coloured" versus "plain" plates. Illustration depicts the four-story corner lithographic establishment of P. S. Duval and the headquarters for the United States Military Magazine at the northwest corner of Bank Alley and Dock Street (i.e., 227 Dock Street). A signboard for a house painter adorns the adjacent property facing Dock Street and "Birch's Auctions" occupies the property at the west end of Bank Alley facing Third Street. A row of cavalry soldiers faces east on Dock Street, as pedestrians, soldiers on foot, and a dog congestl the sidewalks in the foreground. The portico and columns of a stately building, probably part of the Merchant's Exchange, are visible across from Duval's establishment. The scenes are separated and surrounded by an ornate border comprised of patriotic imagery on top, including an eagle clutching the American flag and shield near a bust of George Washington and the state seals of Pennsylvania and Massachusetts; filigree, foliage, and tassels decorate the central portion, where putti hold up a banner displaying the title of the central view; and a lion-mouth fountain adorns the bottom portion of the border. Upper view shows slabs of marble piled in railroad cars pulled by a locomotive at J.K. & M. Freedley's "Bay State Marble Works in West Stockbridge, Mass," and includes residences and cattle. The bustling central scene depicts slabs of marble being moved from the boats and piled onto the wharf at the "Marble Depot Chesnut [sic] St. Wharf Schuyl. Philadelphia," ready for finishing in nearby mills or to be sold by S.F. Jacoby & Co. - Description
- Elaborate Centennial Exhibition commemorative print depicting an arched monument containing a central full-length portrait of George Washington surrounded by vignettes; allegorical figures; and religious quotes by the first president. Washington is depicted mounted on his horse. Arch is adorned with the names of the 38 states and is flanked by columns containing views representing the industries of the North, East, South, and West. Views show a white man laborer of the North chopping a tree at a waterfront, white women loom workers of the East, an overseer on horseback watching an enslaved African American man picking cotton in the South, and a white man farmer reaping his harvest with a horse-drawn plow in the West. Columns also contain allegorical figures to represent the years 1776 and 1876. Justice and Independence (depicted as white women and holding the Declaration), and a prostrate British soldier represent the year 1776 and Peace and Liberty (depicted as white woman and holding a "Ballot"), and a seated enslaved African American man free from his shackles represent the year 1876. Monument also contains views of Independence Hall and Memorial Hall (Centennial Exhibition), the scene showing the signing of the Declaration of Independence, and allegorical figures and emblems symbolizing the classical and industrial arts. Other pictorial elements depict the all-seeing eye; American eagle, shield, and flag; vignettes showing Washington praying, and accepting the sword of surrender from Lord Cornwallis during the American Revolution; and vignette views with dimensions of Centennial Exhibition buildings.
