- Collection of billheads, dated between 1880 and 1898, containing decorative and ornate lettering, ornamented type, vignette illustrations, and pictorial details. Illustrations depict exteriors of storefronts and factories (some adorned in signage); pharmaceutical apparatus and goods, including "patent shaving mug," mortar and pestles, scales, and rates, barrels, and jugs of medicinals; and scenes of a harbor view, a druggist in his pharmacy, and a blacksmith at work on his anvil. Some of the exterior views include patrons entering buildings, street and pedestrian traffic, as well as laborers at work. Pictorial details include trademarks, art nouveau imagery, an incense burner, truss, sun bursts, scrolls, medallions and shields, flowers, frames, flourishes, and filigree., Firms represented include Edward C. Darley from Susan Fenimore Cooper's "Pages and Pictures from the Writings of James Fenimore Cooper" (New York, 1861); portrait illustrations, some from J. B. Longacre's "National Portrait Gallery" (probably 1854 edition); and vignette specimens of the American Bank Note Company and their predecessor companies. Cooper illustrations depict scenes on the frontier and ship decks, with Native Americans, and of battles; deathbeds; and of informal meeting from his works The Oak Openings, The Redskins, The Chainbearer, The Pathfinder, The Red Rover, The Monikins, Deerslayer, Homeward Bound, Lionel Lincoln, The Pilot, Last of the Mohicans, The Wept Wish-ton Wish, The Spy, and Wing and Wing. Washington is depicted mounted on his horse. Arch is adorned with the names of the 38 states and is flanked by columns containing views representing the industries of the North, East, South, and West. Views show a white man laborer of the North chopping a tree at a waterfront, white women loom workers of the East, an overseer on horseback watching an enslaved African American man picking cotton in the South, and a white man farmer reaping his harvest with a horse-drawn plow in the West. Columns also contain allegorical figures to represent the years 1776 and 1876. The scenes are separated and surrounded by an ornate border comprised of patriotic imagery on top, including an eagle clutching the American flag and shield near a bust of George Washington and the state seals of Pennsylvania and Massachusetts; filigree, foliage, and tassels decorate the central portion, where putti hold up a banner displaying the title of the central view; and a lion-mouth fountain adorns the bottom portion of the border. Upper view shows slabs of marble piled in railroad cars pulled by a locomotive at J.K. & M. Freedley's "Bay State Marble Works in West Stockbridge, Mass," and includes residences and cattle. - Full-length portrait of Mai (known as Omai in Britain,) a young indigenous man from Raiatea, who became the second Pacific Islander to visit Europe. Mai is depicted with long, black hair, barefooted, attired in a white robe, and has tattoos on his hands. He holds a feather taumi (gorget) in his right hand and a carved wooden headrest, which may have doubled as a stool, under his left arm. Mai acted as an interpreter to James Cook and joined the crew of the H.M.S. Adventure, traveling to London in 1774. During his two-year stay in England, he became admired by London high society and painted and sketched by a number of artists including Sir Joshua Reynolds, William Hodges, William Parry, and Nathaniel Dance. - Fair certificate containing vignettes and scenes related to agriculture, horticulture, and industrial arts. At the top, a female allegorical figure, sits upon a rug-covered throne with her arms outstretched. She is flanked by symbols of agriculture, including wheat, farm produce, and livestock. On the sides, vignettes depict tools and products of the book arts and fine arts, a threshing machine, a steam locomotive, and stems of flowers, and a grape vine. At the bottom, a historical scene of Egyptians slaves, in front of the pyramids and under the view of an overseer, cutting wheat with sickles is contrasted to a farmer harvesting his field with a horse-drawn reaper. The Pennsylvania State Agricultural Society was founded in 1851 by representatives from 50 counties with the object to "foster and improve agriculture, horticulture, and the domestic and household arts."
