- Glass negative showing the Grand Army of the Republic marching on Broad Street seen from above during the Centennial celebrations. The parade travels down the street which is lined with crowds of people. A building with two round cupolas stands on the right. The grandstands and buildings on the right hold signs advretising Throns Broadway Beer Garden, Solar Tip Shoes, and the Opera House. The Centennial Anniversary of the framing and creation of the Constitution was held on September 16-18, 1887 in Philadelphia. Organized by representatives from the various states and territories, the festivities included a military display, orations and concerts, and an industrial parade. The Grand Army of the Republic was a fraternal organization founded in 1866 for veterans of the Union forces in the Civil War. The politically influential group contributed to the elections of five presidents and began the tradition of Memorial Day in 1868. The group dissolved in 1956 after the death of its last member Albert Woolson.
