- Glass negative showing a view of the two-story Deshler-Morris House at 5442 Germantown Avenue seen from across a brick road lined with trolley tracks. The house has shuttered windows and vines growing up its walls. A tall tree grows in the sidewalk on the opposite side of the street. David Deshler built the original four-room summer cottage on this Germantown lot in 1752, adding the three-story front addition in 1772. The house was sold to Col. Isaac Franks in 1792 after Deshler’s death. President George Washington rented the home for the duration of the yellow fever epidemic of 1793 and the summer of 1794. Elliston and John Perot purchased the house in 1804, selling it to Elliston’s son-in-law Samuel B. Morris after his death in 1834. The house stayed in the possession of the Morris family for over a century, when Elliston P. Morris donated the house to the National Parks Service in 1948. Morris left Avocado, named after a Perot family estate in Bermuda, to his daughter Elizabeth Canby Morris in his will. It was sold in 1947 after her death. - Film negative showing a distant view of the Pennsylvania State Capitol building at the end of a pathway in a park in Harrisburg. In the left, a building with two towers stands adjacent to a building with a spire. In the center stands the Dauphin County Veteran's Memorial, a tall obelisk. The Capitol is adorned with pillars and a dome. The State Capitol building was designed in 1902 by Joseph Miller Huston. Known as Huston Capitol, it was the third state capitol building to be built in Harrisburg. The first, Hills Capitol, was razed by fire in 1897 and the second, Cobb Capitol, was discontinued in 1899 due to lack of funds. The Dauphin County Veteran's Memorial was designed by Edward Hudson Worrall to honor local soldiers who died during the Civil War. Construction began in 1867, and was completed in 1876 after financial setbacks. Cooper Shapely (129 South Fifth Street). Boys sit and stand in front of the dispensary building while a horse-drawn Knickerbocker Ice Company cart is parked in front of the Bank Note Company. Founded in 1786 by Benjamin Rush, the dispensary provided medical attention to the indigent sick. Morris. Founded in 1786, the Dispensary provided in-home care to the indigent sick and specialized in inoculation against smallpox. Doctors donated their time to the institution, providing medicine to patients free of charge, in return for medical experience. After renting properties near Chestnut and Strawberry streets, the Dispensary constructed its own out-patient clinic at 127 South Fifth Street in 1801. The plan of the Dispensary shows a “Prescribing Room,” an apothecary shop, and a room for patients on the ground floor, and a Manager’s Room, Library, and three bedrooms on the second floor. - Glass negative showing large, flowering horse chestnut tree in the garden at the Deshler-Morris House at 5442 Germantown Avenue. The tree stands in a lawn surrounded by tall shrubs with a circular flowerbed in the foreground. The back facade of the House is visible in the background. David Deshler built the original four-room summer cottage on this Germantown lot in 1752, adding the three-story front addition in 1772. The house was sold to Col. Isaac Franks in 1792 after Deshler’s death. President George Washington rented the home for the duration of the yellow fever epidemic of 1793 and the summer of 1794. Elliston and John Perot purchased the house in 1804, selling it to Elliston’s son-in-law Samuel B. Morris after his death in 1834. The house stayed in the possession of the Morris family for over a century, when Elliston P. Morris donated the house to the National Parks Service in 1948. Perot, a man with a beard and a bowler hat, stands to the left of the path. Par-la-Ville was built for William B. Perot, Bermuda’s first postmaster, in 1814. - Glass negative showing a crowd of people gathered next to the Princess Hotel. Seveal more people occupy the balcony on the second floor of the building. A flagpole stands in front, flying an American flag as well as various nautifcal flags. The crowd looks out onto the water, where sailboats float past. Opened in 1885, the Princess Hotel was named after the royal visit of Princess Louise, daughter of Queen Victoria, to Bermuda. - Glass negative showing a group of people on the beach at Asbury Park, N.J. Some swim in the water while others rest on the sand. One of the men in the foreground is Walter Shipley. There is a group of three children holding hands in the foreground. Ropes extending into the water delineate a swimming area and two boats are visible toward the horizon. Some of the people wear bathing costumes. Asbury Park was developed in 1871 as a residential resort by James A. Bradley (1830-1921), a New York brush manufacturer. The town was named for Francis Asbury (1745-1816), the first American bishop of the Methodist Episcopal Church.
