- Glass negative showing Kimberton School, a series of three-story buildings located on a street corner. The building on the right has a lantern spire on the roof and the center building has multiple chimneys. A stone wall and wooden fence separate the buildings from the road. Emmor Kimber (1775-1850), a Quaker educator, established Kimberton Boarding School, originally the French Creek Boarding School for Girls, in 1817. The name changed in 1820. It specialized in training girls to become teachers and operated with an honor code instead of a penal system. - Glass negative showing the National Bank of Germantown at 5504 Germantown Avenue, a two-story stone building with decorative bars on the side windows and an elaborate cornice and columns flanking the entryway. The National Bank of Germantown was chartered by the state of Pennsylvania in 1813 and began operations in 1814 in the parlor of the house of Dr. Charles Bensell. The Centennial Anniversary of the framing and creation of the Constitution was held on September 16-18, 1887 in Philadelphia. Organized by representatives from the various states and territories, the festivities included a military display, orations and concerts, and an industrial parade. The Grand Army of the Republic was a fraternal organization founded in 1866 for veterans of the Union forces in the Civil War. The politically influential group contributed to the elections of five presidents and began the tradition of Memorial Day in 1868. The group dissolved in 1956 after the death of its last member Albert Woolson.
