Title: Catholic T[otal] A[bstinence] Fountain. West [Fairmount] Park
Description: Glass negative showing the fountain designed in honor of prominent Irish or Catholic Revolutionary heroes that was erected 1875-1877 by the national temperance society at Fountain Avenue and Avenue of the Republic on the Centennial grounds. The monument designed in the shape of a maltese cross by Herman Kirn contains statues of Father Theobold Matthew (Irish temperance reformer), Charles Carroll (only Catholic signer of the Declaration), Commodore Barry (Irish-born naval commander known as the Father of the American Navy), and Archbishop Caroll (first Catholic Bishop of the U.S.) mounted on fountain pedestals. The statues surround the central sculpted figure of Moses who holds the Ten Commandments. The Moses sculpture rests upon a rock-mound within a marble basin. Water flows over the rocks into a pool. The Fountain, commissioned by the Catholic Total Abstinence Union of America, was created as an attraction for the 1876 Centennial Exposition., Photographer remarks: Dull day. Detail not sharp. Description: Glass negative showing the rear of the Deshler-Morris House at 5442 Germantown Avenue, a two-story home with shuttered windows, a balcony on the second floor, and porch on the first floor. Marriott C. Morris' mother Martha Canby Morris and Morris' Aunt Beulah's neice Anna Rhoads sit on a bench on the porch. David Deshler built the original four-room summer cottage on this Germantown lot in 1752, adding the three-story front addition in 1772. The house was sold to Col. Isaac Franks in 1792 after Deshler’s death. President George Washington rented the home for the duration of the yellow fever epidemic of 1793 and the summer of 1794. Elliston and John Perot purchased the house in 1804, selling it to Elliston’s son-in-law Samuel B. Morris after his death in 1834. The house stayed in the possession of the Morris family for over a century, when Elliston P. Morris donated the house to the National Parks Service in 1948. Description: Glass negative showing Smith's house and the Beach House seen from a distance standing on a dune. Grass grows in front of the buildings and trees grow behind. A smaller building stands to the left with empty flagpoles both in front and behind. Robert Stockton bought the land of what would become Sea Girt in 1853. After his death in 1866, developers bought the land and in 1875 the Sea Girt Land and Improvement Company took over Stockton’s old mansion, added wings to either side, and renamed it the Beach House. The Beach House was a popular hotel for many years, reopening in 1920 as Stockton Hotel.
