Title: Old Nick in Wall Street
Description: Cartoon mocking Nicholas Biddle, president of the controversial Bank of the U.S., as a corrupt emperor of finance served by New York's financial district. Depicts a self-effacing Biddle on the steps of a bank delivering a speech to a large crowd of his obsequious cheering subjects comprised of bankers and brokers. Two men, possibly New York editors accused of accepting bribes in return for publishing pro-Bank articles, Charles King and/or Mordecai Manual Noah and/or James W. Webb, hoist him on their knees. Biddle declares that he will bear the burden of the attacks of the Bank opponents as those before him will acquit him of scandal. In the far left background, a group of men describe Biddle as a monster and allude to his dubious relationship with New York merchant Silas E. Burrows, who was accused of bribing Noah and Webb. Title: Banks & bribery, v.s. balls & bumbs scene 1st Or the destruction of aristocracy monopoly and oppression
Description: Cartoon concerning President Jackson's destruction of the Bank of the United States, including his veto of the Bank's recharter and the removal of its federal deposits. Depicts Jackson, "Jack Downing," and others attacking the Bank with axes, "veto mortar," and cannon balls. Jackson and "Downing" hollar about "smashing down" "Monopoly & Oppression" as well as the absence of a "nest of varmants" when the house was originally built. Members of Bank investigative "committees" flee the building, while others are crushed under the bank, its "deposit pillar" destroyed. Spectators, including evil sprites, run a press, clamor for tossed money bags labelled with alleged bribery amounts, and scream "This is a fair business transaction." Title: The gold & silver artificers of Phila. In civic procession 22 Feb 1832
Description: Event lithograph showing the gold and silver artificers of Philadelphia on procession past the Second Bank of the United States (420 Chestnut) for the centennial celebration of the birth of George Washington. Government officials and prominent citizens led the parade order, followed by the tradesmen, then the volunteer fire companies, and lastly the military. Shows the craftsmen, all attired in top hats and sashes, led by a parade marshall on horse-back. He is followed by a six-horse mounted team pulling a float carrying men operating and protecting a coin press. Two other men, probably the marshall's aids, on horseback, one on a rearing horse, flank the rear of the vehicle. Several rows of marching artisans follow the float led by an artificer carrying a large banner adorned with a bust portrait of Washington. The portrait is encircled by a wreath and bordered by an eagle that clasps a banner in his beak reading "Pater Patriae" [design on distributed coin]. Along the parade route, throngs of spectators watch from the steps of the bank, along the street, and from the second floor windows of businesses adjacent to the financial institution. Signage for "Thomas Fletcher, Manufacturer of Silver Plate and Jewelry"; "Fletcher & Gardiner"; and "Browne & Robb 132" adorn the storefronts. Merchandise is displayed in the windows of Fletcher & Gardiner. Spectators along the street include well-attired men, women, and children, including several boys who run to and gather in front of the float to retrieve freshly pressed coins being thrown from the vehicle. Many raise their arms and retrieve coins from the ground. Description: Advertisement looking east down Chestnut Street showing the large, prominent hotel opened in 1826 following the conversion by John Rea of several properties at 419-423 Chestnut Street. Gentlemen convene near the entranceway and portico of the hotel in front of which a carriage is parked. On the north side of the street, east of the hotel, several individuals, including couples and families, promenade and converse on the several blocks of businesses visible to the riverfront. Opposite the hotel, on the south side of the street, a couple promenades and boys play marbles in front of the former Second Bank of the United States (420 Chestnut) as another couple and several shadowy figures of pedestrians walk down the sidewalks in the background. In the street, a couple on horseback, an omnibus, and carriage travels. Title: Bank of the United States Records, 1790-1842 (inclusive)
Description: The Bank of the United States Records contains correspondence and documents primarily related to the second Bank of the United States in Philadelphia, with a small collection of material from the first bank, and from several of the second bank's branches in other American cities. There is correspondence with officers of the banks and its patrons John Sergeant, Basil Hall, Nathaniel Silsbee, and William Henry Harrison, as well as documents relating to the construction of the second Bank building designed by William Strickland. Papers relating to the duties of the Commissioners of Loans in the states of Georgia, Massachusetts, New York, and Pennsylvania are filed at the end of the collection., The early national period of the United States was marked by two attempts at central banking, the first and second Bank of the United States, both headquartered in Philadelphia. The first bank was chartered in 1791 with a twenty-year term that was allowed to expire in 1811. Its first president, serving from 1791 through 1807, was Philadelphia merchant Thomas Willing (1731-1821). The bank established offices of discount and deposit in 1792 in Baltimore, Boston, Charleston, and New York, after which it opened offices in Norfolk (1800), Washington and Savannah (1802), and New Orleans (1805)., Plagued by financial troubles during and after the War of 1812, Congress authorized a second bank in 1816, also with a twenty-year renewable term. The acting treasury secretary and Philadelphia native William Jones (1760-1831) was appointed the second bank's first president, succeeded in 1819 by Langdon Cheves (1776-1857), and in 1823 by Nicholas Biddle (1786-1844). The second Bank of the United States opened in Philadelphia in 1817 with seventeen branches in twelve states and the District of Columbia; by 1830 there were twenty-five branches in operation. The bank was not renewed by Congress, and ceased operation in 1836.
