Description: Racist trade card for the Merrick Thread Company at 248 Chestnut Street in Philadelphia and depicting Black men, attired only in loincloths, pulling a captured whale onto a beach. The five men, portrayed in racist caricature, stand on the beach and hold onto the thread coming from an oversized spool labeled, "Merrick Thread Co. Best Six Cord 8," in the right. The whale with an open mouth of sharp teeth is pulled from the ocean onto the beach. In the background, two men run, and palm trees are visible in the right. The Beach House, a large building with two flagpoles, stands in the background. Robert Stockton bought the land of what would become Sea Girt in 1853. After his death in 1866, developers bought the land and in 1875 the Sea Girt Land and Improvement Company took over Stockton’s old mansion, added wings to either side, and renamed it the Beach House. The Beach House was a popular hotel for many years, reopening in 1920 as Stockton Hotel. Elliston Perot Morris bought property in Sea Girt, N.J. in 1875, where he built the summer home Avocado after designs by Quaker architect Hibberd Yarnall. Morris left Avocado, named after a Perot family estate in Bermuda, to his daughter Elizabeth Canby Morris in his will. It was sold in 1947 after her death.
