A steamboat, rowboat, and docked ships are visible in the background. Also includes the names of the members of the building committee in the lower right corner. The church moored at the foot of Dock Street until reconsecrated to a New Jersey parish in 1853 and placed on a brick foundation. - Unmounted stereograph shows a model of the steamboat, propellors and engine John Stevens purportedly built ca. 1804 and navigated in the Hudson River. Includes a framed portrait of Stevens, who also invented the first steamboat that navigated the ocean, in the model boat. Located in the Machinery and Heavy Wheeled Vehicles section of the fair building. The U.S. Sanitary Commission organized the Great Central Fair in Logan Square from June 7-28, 1864. - Description
- Partisan genre scene depicting the unloading of a rowboat with medical supplies along a shoreline near dense thickets of trees. In the center, a white man Confederate military officer keeps the boat moored through a rope in his hand. He looks back toward a white man, possibly a doctor, climbing down from a tree. An enslaved African American man (his back to the viewer), ankle deep in the water, holds a wooden pole on the shore as a lever as a white man in civilian clothes rolls a barrel toward a Confederate soldier (his back to the viewer). The soldier places sacks on the back of a mule. A sack, crate, and barrel lie near the mule. Volck was active in smuggling medicines into the South across the Potomac River in response to the Union's ban of the passage of medical supplies to the South., Inscribed upper left corner: 18., Issued as plate 18 in Sketches from the Civil War in North America (London [i.e., Baltimore]: [the author], 1863-1864), a series of pro-Confederacy cartoons drawn and published by Baltimore cartoonist Adalbert John Volck under the pseudonym V. Blada. The "first issue" of 10 prints (numbered 1, 2, 5, 6, 7, 12, 15, 16, 21, 24), with imprint "London, 1863" were printed as etchings. The remaining 20 prints (numbered 4, 8, 9-11, 14, 17-20, 23, 25-27, 29, 30, 32, 33, 40, 45) headed "Second and third issues of V. - View looking toward the water works originally built between 1812 and 1822 after the designs of Philadelphia engineer Frederick Graff. In the foreground, elegantly dressed women and men sit and stand on the veranda admiring the vista as street and pedestrian traffic approaches and departs from the covered Upper Ferry Bridge. Traffic includes horse-drawn carriages and men, women and children walking or standing on the bridge, looking over the rail at the Schuylkill River below. Canal barges travel under the bridge and in the canal lock across from the water works. The water works include the engine house, mill house, and pavilions on the mound dam and on reservoir hill. A water fountain and trees complete the view. Also shows businesses and residences behind the water works in the background. The Lancaster-Schuylkill Bridge, known as the Upper Ferry Bridge, was erected 1809-1812, with Robert Mills serving as architect and Lewis Wernwag as engineer.
