Title: "The irrepressible conflict" or the Republican barge in danger
Description: Cartoon predicting doom for the Republican Party whose moderate antislavery factions intentionally caused radical abolitionist William Seward to lose the presidential nomination at the National Convention in 1860. Depicts the "Republican Barge" with Lincoln at the helm being tossed on rough sea near a rocky shore. Within the boat Horace Greeley, Missouri Congressman Edward Bates, and Globe editor Francis Blair disparage Seward and the "Irrepressible Conflict" (a catchphrase from an 1858 Seward speech referring to the conflict within the Union over slavery) he has caused as they throw him overboard. The hoisted Seward warns that he alone can save the boat. An African American man, portrayed as a racist caricature and attired in a white collared shirt, a bowtie, a striped waistcoat, pants, and a "Discords Patent Life Preserver" wrapped around his chest, says in the vernacular, “if de boat and all hands sink, dis Nigger sure to swim, Yah! Yah!” Additional passengers, including Massachusetts Governor Nathaniel Banks and "Courier" editor James Webb, comment on the breakers ahead and the improbability of being saved. Yates & Co. clothing store, which began operations on the ground floor of the Public Ledger Building at Sixth and Chestnut Streets in Philadelphia in 1876. Title: Belmont and waterworks. Mount Pleasant, Fairmount Park, Philada
Description: Lithograph showing mules walking on towpaths pulling canal boats in the Schuylkill River in the foreground. Also shows distant views of West Fairmount Park properties, including Belmont Mansion, the estate house and country seat of Judge Richard Peters; the smokestack of the Belmont Waterworks engine house, designed by Frederick Graff in the late 1860s; and Mount Pleasant Mansion (i.e. Arnold Mansion) built after designs by Thomas Nevil 1761-1765 for Captain John Macpherson. Includes a locomotive traveling north on the west bank of the river in the right background. Macpherson, a privateer during the Seven Years’ War, purchased the estate with profits from these operations. Free white and Black laborers, indentured servants, and at least four enslaved people of African descent, whose names are unknown, worked on the plantation. In 1779, General Benedict Arnold purchased Mount Pleasant for his wife Peggy Shippen, but they never occupied the house. In 1792, General Jonathan Williams purchased the mansion. The City of Philadelphia purchased the property from the Williams family in 1869. Title: [Pulling the boat ashore, likely Elliston P. Morris Jr. and Marriott C. Morris Jr., Sea Girt]
Description: Film negative showing three children pulling a rowboat up onto the sand away from the shoreline on the beach at Sea Girt. The two boys in front are likely Marriott C. Morris' sons Elliston P. Morris Jr. and Marriott C. Morris Jr. The wear sailor suits, and one boy wears a hat. A dog stands in the sand close to the water. The Beach House is visible in the far distance. Robert Stockton bought the land of what would become Sea Girt in 1853. After his death in 1866, developers bought the land and in 1875 the Sea Girt Land and Improvement Company took over Stockton’s old mansion, added wings to either side, and renamed it the Beach House. The Beach House was a popular hotel for many years, reopening in 1920 as Stockton Hotel. Title: Smuggling medicines into the South
Description: Partisan genre scene depicting the unloading of a rowboat with medical supplies along a shoreline near dense thickets of trees. In the center, a white man Confederate military officer keeps the boat moored through a rope in his hand. He looks back toward a white man, possibly a doctor, climbing down from a tree. An enslaved African American man (his back to the viewer), ankle deep in the water, holds a wooden pole on the shore as a lever as a white man in civilian clothes rolls a barrel toward a Confederate soldier (his back to the viewer). The soldier places sacks on the back of a mule. A sack, crate, and barrel lie near the mule. Title: Marion crossing the Pedee Engraved from the original picture in the possession of the American Art-Union
Description: Historical print showing Brig. Gen. Francis Marion, known as the Swamp Fox, during the American Revolution and commanding a raft down the river in between one of his guerilla attacks in South Carolina.
