- Trade card promoting Clark Thread Company and depicting a racist caricature of an African American boy fishing with Clark thread. The boy is portrayed with exaggerated facial features and expressions. Shows the boy seated and with his legs straddling a giant spool of thread labeled, "Clark's trademark O.N.T. spool cotton" at the edge of a river. The boy holds a fishing rod across his chest and attempts to break the cotton thread, which he is using as fishing line. He looks at the viewer and says in the vernacular "I reckon dis yere's strong 'nuff suah." He is barefoot and attired in blue pants with red patches at the knees; an orange shirt with ragged sleeves; a green vest; and a brown cap. In the right on the ground at his feet is an orange-labeled canister from which worms escape. In the background is tall grass and the multi-colored horizon. In the foreground, the edge of the spool, the canister, and end of the rod are reflected in the water. The George A. Clark & Brother Company, manufactory of embroidery and sewing thread, was founded in 1863 in Newark, N.J. The firm was renamed Clark & Co. in 1879, and in the 1880s created a six-cord, soft finished thread called "Our New Thread" or "O.N.T." The business merged with J. & P. Coats in 1896, which lead to a series of mergers with fourteen other companies. - Description
- Racist circular promoting Davis Sewing Machine Co. and depicting a caricature of an African American boy “spying” into an office after having played a practical joke. In the satiric scene, the boy stands on the front steps of a building that has a sign that reads, "Office of the Daily Terror." He leans towards the door and looks through the keyhole with his right eye and his mouth open in a mischievous smile. In his right hand he carries a box labelled "tacks." In his left hand he holds the leather strap of a container marked "C.H.E." and with the handle of a brush sticking out of it. He is attired in a cap; a collared, long-sleeved shirt; and plaid pants with suspenders. The image inside the circular shows the interior of the newspaper office. A balding white man, attired in dress shoes; pants; a waistcoat; and a collared shirt with a bowtie, jolts into the air out of a wooden chair. A tack sticks into his behind. He clutches a newspaper labeled, "Enterprise," in his hand, while a quill and a pair of scissors labeled, "Warranted Can't Steal" fly into the air. In the left is a wastebasket with crumbled papers, one of which reads, "Poets." In the background is a desk. Rows of sheets of paper and a "Daily Terror" sign are pinned to the wall above it. Brothers John and Joseph Sheldon founded the Davis Sewing Machine Company in Watertown, N.Y. in 1868. The firm manufactured the sewing machines invented by Job Davis. In circa 1892, the company began to manufacture bicycles, and soon thereafter phased out the production of sewing machines. - Full-length group portrait depicting the Hamaikari family, who were members of the Imperial Japanese Troupe. From left to right, shows brothers Denkichi, Sentarō, Yonekichi, and their father Rinzō Hamaikari. Denkichi and Rinzō wear chonmage hairstyles, which are shaved in the front with a top knot. They are attired in kimonos and sandals and carry swords in scabbards at their waist. Sentarō and Yonekichi wear their hair in top knots and are attired in long-sleeved shirts, striped pants, and sandals. Denkichi and Rinzō sit in wooden chairs, while Yonekichi stands with his right arm on Sentarō’s shoulder, who is seated on a small wooden stool and looks down. In the background is a backdrop with a column and a two-handled urn. Richard Risley Carlisle (1814-1874), known as Professor Risley, assembled and managed a group of eighteen Japanese acrobats and musicians from Yokohama, Japan called the Imperial Japanese Troupe. They toured America in 1867, performing in Philadelphia in March. They then travelled to Europe, including Britain, France, Belgium, and Spain. - Trade card depicting a racist, comic, genre scene to promote the Co-operative Dress Association established by journalist and lecturer Kate Fields in 1881. Shows an older African American boy, portrayed with large eyes, nose, lips, and ears, in a hive eating honey comb as a bear enters from behind him. The boy, attired in a collared red shirt with the sleeves rolled up and blue pants rolled to the knees, sits, left knee up and right leg out, on a mound and to the left of a stack of comb. He smiles and raises a piece of comb toward his mouth. Above him and to the right, the rear end of a bear in a hole in the hive is visible. The Co-operative Dress Association, incorporated in April 1881 with 5000 stockholders, was established to provide clothing "articles of fine quality at fair prices" without the "inducement for illegitimate gain" to women of limited incomes. - Racist trade card promoting Gately & Britton's home furnishing store in Reading, Pa. and depicting a caricature of an African American boy sitting against a fence post eating a large slice of watermelon. Shows the boy squatting on his toes and smiling at the viewer as he holds a piece of watermelon in both hands. He has taken the melon out of a field of watermelon plants surrounded by a barbed wire fence. He is attired in a torn straw hat, blue shorts with a patch, and only the partial sleeves of a red and white striped shirt. The rest of the shirt has ripped and hangs from the barbed wire in the left. On the ground in the left is the watermelon with a slice cut from it with the handle of a knife protuding out of it. - Racist trade card promoting James S. Kirk & Co.’s Satinet soap and depicting a caricature of an African American boy carrying an oversized branch of cotton and a red cloth that trails behind him. Shows the African American boy attired in a torn straw hat, a white collared shirt, white overalls, and white shoes walking with his right leg lifted up. Over his shoulder he carries an oversized branch of cotton with his right hand. Under his left arm he carries a bolt of red cloth which has come unfurled in a train behind him. The cloth reads, “Satinet.” James S. Kirk (1818-1886) began his soap manufactory in 1839 in Utica, New York. - Abolitionist portrait of the propagandized emancipated enslaved children, Isaac White and Rosina Downs, standing, arm-in-arm. Isaac has brown skin, and wears a shirt jacket, pants, and broad tie. He has his left hand tucked into his shirt jacket. Rosina has fair skin, and wears an off-the-shoulder, calf-length dress, cinched at the waist, and with stripe details on the neckline and skirt. She also wears pantaloons. Freed by Union General Butler in New Orleans, the children toured through the North with other emancipated enslaved people, and Colonel George H. - Advertisement showing the busy forge shop of "Henry Beagle's Hame Manufactory" on the 400 block of Magnolia Street. Within the shop, laborers enter the doorway, toil at windows, and hoist a bundle of hames (i.e., part of the harness that fits around the neck of a draught horse through which the reigns pass). Outside of the building, other workers, including a boy, gather bundles of hames, transport the pieces by hand-drawn cart, and load them on to the back of a horse-drawn dray as a couple passes on the sidewalk. Several working smoke stacks adorn the roof of the shop and a couple passes on the sidewalk. In the street, a horse-drawn freight car travels. A lad leads the horses as the freight driver steers from within the front of the car. A small boy sits next to the driver who stands. Also shows neighboring buildings. - Racist cartoon containing vignettes about a group of African American children, portrayed in caricature, at a May Day party where Happy Lil’ Sal and Por Lil' Mose are crowned as Queen and King. In the left, Mose, attired in a gold crown, a blue sailor suit, and blue shoes, stands holding the may pole. Sal, attired in a gold crown, red roses around her head and neck, a pink dress, yellow stockings, and white shoes, carries sunflowers. At the bottom, a group of African American children hold ribbons and dance around the may pole in exaggerated movements as a boy sits on a wooden fence playing the banjo. - Exterior view of the Dundas-Lippincott mansion at the busy northeast corner of Broad and Walnut Streets, Philadelphia. Shows the mansion surrounded by a wall with wrought iron. Steps lead to ionic columns, which hold up the pediment over the front door. Several trees grow on either side of the house. Numerous pedestrians, including an African American boy, as well as a car, carriage, and trolley travel in front of and around the residence. Designed by Thomas U. Walter, the Dundas-Lippincott Mansion was built around 1838 for Philadelphia banker James Dundas on the old grounds of the amusement center Vauxhall Gardens. Nicknamed the "Yellow Mansion," due to its buff color, the residence was known for its impressive garden and as a place for lavish entertainment. - Street scene with a view of the New Market shed on South Second Street. Depicts a group of men, women, and children with a dog, possibly a procession of a butcher's trade association, gathered across from the shed and by a bull decorated with garlands of flowers. An African American man fiddle player entertains the group as an African American boy and a dog runs toward them. Attached to the back of the shed is the fire engine house with cupola, known as the "headhouse." The New Market, erected about 1745, was created following a petition by the growing population of South Philadelphia residents who found it a hardship to cross Dock Creek to reach the High Street Market. - Lithograph after genre painter John Lewis Krimmel's 1821 watercolor, "Parade of Victuallers." Depicts a view from publisher M. Carey & Son's Bookshop at the southeast corner of Fourth and Chestnut streets of the March 15, 1821 trade union parade organized by butcher William White to celebrate, promote, and sell the city's high quality meat stock. The streets, balconies, doorways, and open windows teem with spectators, including an African American man oyster peddler sitting upon his cart and a small white boy displaying an illustrated banner inscribed, "Fed by William White."
