A special election was called in Nov. 1863 to fill the seat left vacant upon the death of Democrat William Temple; Republican Nathaniel B. Smithers ran against Democrat Charles Brown, and won with 99% of the vote. In the regular election the following year, Smithers lost to Democrat John A.
