Shall the sons of Delaware ... be cast aside to make room for a talkative adventurer like Charley Brown? ... Let us then roll up such a majority for Nathaniel B. Smithers, as will demonstrate to all worn-out politicians from other states, that Delaware has always on hand material enough of her own, to serve her in any emergency
Description: A special election was called in Nov. 1863 to fill the seat left vacant upon the death of Democrat William Temple; Republican Nathaniel B. Smithers ran against Democrat Charles Brown, and won with 99% of the vote. In the regular election the following year, Smithers lost to Democrat John A.
