Title: Liberty Bell, Independence Hall, [Philadelphia]
Description: Glass negative showing the Liberty Bell suspended from a pulley inside Independence Hall. The bell is inscribed with words and Roman numerals and has a large crack down the center. Construction on Independence Hall began in 1732 and completed in 1753 after the designs of Andrew Hamilton (1676-1741) and Edmund Woolley (1695-1771). It originally housed all three branches of the Pennsylvania colonial government, as well as being host to the signing of the Declaration of Independence, and the Constitutional Convention. The building went through numerous renovations and reconstructions, until in 1950 when the National Park Service restored much of the architecture and interior to its 1776 appearance. It is a part of Independence National Park and a major tourist attraction as of the 21st century. The Liberty Bell was commissioned in 1752 by the Pennsylvania Provincial Assembly. It first cracked after its arrival in Philadelphia and was recast twice by John Pass and John Stow. The large distinctive crack formed sometime in the early 19th century.
