Description: Exterior view depicting the two-and-a-half story antique shop of James Eham, an African American, at 1237 Pine Street. Shop is heavily adorned with antiques and curiosities, including cigar store Native Americans, ship models, and weather vanes. Candlesticks and a menorah are displayed in the first floor windows. Eham, born enslaved in Virginia, settled in Philadelphia in 1876 and soon after became an antiques dealer. By 1927, he owned two antique stores in Philadelphia and one in New York. Naturalized in 1856, Serz earned enough income from his trade to be taxed by the I.R.S. during the Civil War. During the 1870s, his bird's-eye print "Philadelphia and Environs" was advertised in the "Public Ledger" and he served as professor of drawing at the Philadelphia Conservatory of Music. Serz was also a president and secretary of the old Artists Club and member of several German societies, including the German Society of Pennsylvania. He died of a skull fracture in 1881.

Descended from Commodore William Bainbridge and Thomas Harris, the first surgeon-general of the United States Navy, Harris and her family resided in Philadelphia by 1866. In 1893, she married John L. Wilson (b. 1850), later treasurer of Coal Land Corporation and the couple resided in the Rittenhouse Square neighborhood. Harris was active in the Sedgely Club and often attended and held card parties, teas, and luncheons noted in the local press. Harris spent her later years residing in Bryn Mawr where she died circa 1948.

Descended from Commodore William Bainbridge and Thomas Harris, the first surgeon-general of the United States Navy, Harris and her family resided in Philadelphia by 1866. In 1893, she married John L. Wilson (b. 1850), later treasurer of Coal Land Corporation and the couple resided in the Rittenhouse Square neighborhood. Harris was active in the Sedgely Club and often attended and held card parties, teas, and luncheons noted in the local press. Harris spent her later years residing in Bryn Mawr where she died circa 1948.

Title: Who's dar?
Description: Trade card depicting a racist, comic, genre scene to promote the Co-operative Dress Association established by journalist and lecturer Kate Fields in 1881. Shows an older African American boy, portrayed with large eyes, nose, lips, and ears, in a hive eating honey comb as a bear enters from behind him. The boy, attired in a collared red shirt with the sleeves rolled up and blue pants rolled to the knees, sits, left knee up and right leg out, on a mound and to the left of a stack of comb. He smiles and raises a piece of comb toward his mouth. Above him and to the right, the rear end of a bear in a hole in the hive is visible. The Co-operative Dress Association, incorporated in April 1881 with 5000 stockholders, was established to provide clothing "articles of fine quality at fair prices" without the "inducement for illegitimate gain" to women of limited incomes.
