Title: The pious Mr. All-bone, taking leave of his directors previous to his departure for Europe
Description: Cartoon about the Panic of 1857 satirizing the dubious overseas departure of the Bank of Pennsylvania president Thomas Allibone preceding the failure of the financial institution in the fall of 1857. Allibone claimed he departed for Europe for health reasons with the support of the Board of Director. The board later charged he resigned while in debt $200,000 to the bank. Shows the Bank of Pennsylvania board wishing a teary-eye Allibone farewell at the "Steamer Europe Sail" wharf. The board stands on "Bank of Pennsylvania" charters and many sneer and hold handkerchiefs to their faces. To the rear of the group, a white woman "reduced to absolute want" from the bank failure, stands with her children, including a baby at her breast, and asks one of the board members "could you not through your influence, obtain me a situation as housekeeper or school teacher?" The member jeers that his influence is "for his friends" and she should get "some tickets for soup." At the front of the group, the wart-nosed, rotund head of the board, shakes Allibone's hand. He assures the departing president of the entire respect and sympathy for his "good care" of the funds of the "Board, and the Widows, and Orphans." He hopes Allibone will return with "renovated health and strength" as well as a purchased title that includes "Gentleman of the Grand Order of the Rag Mill and the Check Marked Good.", Allibone stands on several sheets of "stock" near his valises. He holds a handkerchief to his face, and carries the book of "Common Prayer" in his coat pocket. He responds that if "a liberal expenditure of THEIR money" restores his health that he will attempt to purchase a title. He also suggests that his well-wisher go to church regularly, keep out of jail, and keep his breeches buttoned up and he "will sail through this crisis with flying colors." In the right, an African American woman peddler holds her nose and states in the vernacular that it is because of the "bad odor of dis paper! won't git much fur dis." Beside her, a white boy fishing at the pier remarks to his wriggling, hooked worm that "yer bound to be catched at last." Also shows an African American man, attired in worn and torn clothing, seated and chewing a stick in front of an overturned barrel while a white cabman races his horse-drawn coach down the street of grocery stores in the background. Description: Advertisement showing the five-story offices and storefront known as the Girard Building (102-104, i.e., 306-308 Chestnut) tenanted by Goodyears, i.e., the Philadelphia warehouse of the New York Belting and Packing Company (104), "Peterson's Book Establishment," i.e., the store of publisher T.B. Peterson & Brothers, and C. J. Peterson, publisher of Peterson' Ladies national magazine (102). Lettering reading "Goodyears Rubber Packing & Belting Company" adorns the roof of the building. Through the open entryways and large display windows, clerks, patrons, and merchandise displays are visible in both stores. Description: Eight-page foldout advertisement for George Gill Green's "August Flower" and "Boschee's German Syrup" containing advertising text pages and five views of Fairmount Park including the Fairmount Water Works and Resevoir, originally built between 1812 and 1822 after the designs of Philadelphia engineer Frederick Graff. Also shows horse-drawn carriages pulling men and women racing north on East River Drive under the New York Connecting Railway Bridge, built 1866-67 after designs by Joseph A. Wilson for the Pennsylvania Railroad. The Promontory Rock Tunnel, bored in 1871, is visible in the background. In the right background, the proposed Centennial Exhibition buildings, and grounds congested with visitors, are visible in West Fairmount Park. The Main Hall and Memorial Hall predominate. Title: Lippincott Mansion
Description: Exterior view of the Dundas-Lippincott mansion at the busy northeast corner of Broad and Walnut Streets, Philadelphia. Shows the mansion surrounded by a wall with wrought iron. Steps lead to ionic columns, which hold up the pediment over the front door. Several trees grow on either side of the house. Numerous pedestrians, including an African American boy, as well as a car, carriage, and trolley travel in front of and around the residence. Designed by Thomas U. Walter, the Dundas-Lippincott Mansion was built around 1838 for Philadelphia banker James Dundas on the old grounds of the amusement center Vauxhall Gardens. Nicknamed the "Yellow Mansion," due to its buff color, the residence was known for its impressive garden and as a place for lavish entertainment. Description: View showing George Washington's carriage, also known as the Dunlap-Powel coach or "Washington's White Chariot," in the foreground. Also shows a crowd of spectators standing in the background adjacent to the estate house at the country seat of Judge Richard Peters known as Belmont above Philadelphia (West Fairmount Park). Construction of the main block of the house began in 1743 but was not completed until circa 1751. The estate, originally purchased by William Peters in 1742 was used as a working model farm by his son Richard until Richard's death in 1828. Title: [Green's August Flower and Boschee's German Syrup trade cards]
Description: Series of illustrated trade cards promoting George Gill Green's "August Flower" and "Boschee's German Syrup". Four trade cards depict views of Fairmount Park, including one eight-page foldout advertisement containing advertising text pages. Illustrations include the Fairmount Water Works and Resevoir, originally built between 1812 and 1822 after the designs of Philadelphia engineer Frederick Graff. Also shows horse-drawn carriages pulling men and women racing north on East River Drive under the New York Connecting Railway Bridge, built 1866-67 after designs by Joseph A. Wilson for the Pennsylvania Railroad. The Promontory Rock Tunnel, bored in 1871, is visible in the background. Other images include people leisurely rowing on a creek under the bridge to Lansdown Island; park visitors standing on a pathway that overlooks the Schuylkill River from the Fairmount Water Works; and men and women strolling, sitting, and traveling in horse-drawn carriages along Wissahickon Drive. Paragraphs of advertising text promote George Gill Green's "August Flower" as a "natural cathartic" that "corrects the acidity of the stomach," and "it is established fact in every town and village on this continent, that [Boschee's] German Syrup is the only remedy that has given satisfaction in severe cases of Lung Disease." Two photographic reproductions depict inverted images of sailboats on the ocean and an inset portrait of a woman. Green was a patent medicine entrepreneur who purchased the rights of these two medicines from his father, Lewis M. Title: Old [De la Plaine] house, N.E. cor. School Lane & Main St., [Germantown]
Description: Glass negative showing the De la Plaine House at 5521-5523 Germantown Avenue, a three-story stone building located on the corner and previously owned by the Morris family. The first floor houses a shop with some of its wares displayed outside. A horse-drawn cart stands on the street in front of the building. James De la Plaine settled in Germantown in 1691. Before his death in 1750, he built a house. It was afterward owned by E.B. Paramore and used as a corner store before the Germantown Mutual Fire Insurance Company bought the property in 1885. Title: Our [Deshler-Morris] house [4782 Main Street] from the other side of Market Sq. [Germantown]
Description: Glass negative showing the Deshler-Morris House at 5442 Germantown Avenue, a two-story house with shuttered windows and ivy climbing up the walls. A horse-drawn carriage stands in front of the home. A fenced lawn is across the street. David Deshler built the original four-room summer cottage on this Germantown lot in 1752, adding the three-story front addition in 1772. The house was sold to Col. Isaac Franks in 1792 after Deshler’s death. President George Washington rented the home for the duration of the yellow fever epidemic of 1793 and the summer of 1794. Elliston and John Perot purchased the house in 1804, selling it to Elliston’s son-in-law Samuel B. Morris after his death in 1834. The house stayed in the possession of the Morris family for over a century, when Elliston P. Morris donated the house to the National Parks Service in 1948. Title: Market Square Street from library window. Old Church & Harkness House
Description: Glass negative showing a view of Market Square separating the Market Square Presbyterian Church and Fromberger-Harkness House from a brick road. Trees grow in planters on the sidewalk while grass and small shrubs grow in the square. A lamppost stands on the street corner while a horse-drawn cart waits in front of the house on the opposite side of the square. The view is seen from the second-story window of the Deshler-Morris House at 5442 Germantown Avenue. First called The Green, Market Square was established from land originally owned by James De la Plaine as early as 1703. As a center of community activity, Market Square contained not only market stalls but also the prison and stocks. Samuel B. Morris planted many of the Square’s original trees. Named for John Fromberger and Mary Warden Harkness, the Fromberger-Harkness House was built as late as 1795. It was occupied variously by St. Luke’s Protestant Episcopal Church (1813-1837), the Young Women’s Christian Association of Germantown (1873-1915), Mary Warden Harkness Boarding Home for Girls (1917-1941), the Germantown Fire Insurance Company (1954-1964), and the Germantown Insurance Co. (1964). Originally built as a Dutch Reformed Church circa 1710, the Market Square Presbyterian Church became a German Reformed Church by 1732. The building was razed and rebuilt in 1838-1839, and then enlarged in 1857. The congregation, led by pastor Jacob Helffenstein, withdrew from the Reformed Church in 1855, become Presbyterian in 1858. In 1888, the church was rebuilt after the designs of architect George T. Pearson.
