Title: Williams Ogle coach and harness maker, no. 280, Chestnut Street, above 10th.. south side, Philadelphia
Description: Advertisement showing a view of the three-and-a half story factory of the “Ogle’s Coach & Harness Manufactory” on the 1000 block of Chestnut Street. Building adorned with signage, including “Wm. Ogle Coach 280 Maker” signs by the entranceway. A gentleman, probably the proprietor, stands at the open entranceway to the first-floor showroom in which several carriages are displayed. A couple approaches the entrance. In the street, a horse-drawn carriage is parked and attended by a disembarked driver on the side. An unhitched sulky is also visible in the street in front of the store. Title: Brandywine Springs Hotel near Wilmington Del
Description: View showing the elegant four-story hotel completed in 1826 after the designs of Thomas U. Walter in Brandywine Springs, Delaware. Elegantly attired guests crowd the first floor porch, are visible in some upper floor windows, and walk and lounge on the grounds. A man on horseback, and a horse-drawn carriage arrive at the hotel near two dogs chasing each other in the driveway. The hotel served as a summer retreat for the well-to-do of the region. Title: [Certificate of the Guardians, Physicans and Surgeons of the] Philadelphia Alms House
Description: Certificate containing an exterior view of the Blockley Almshouse and Philadelphia General Hospital in West Philadelphia. Under a cloudy sky, a horse-drawn carriage passes and a few men walk in front of the building. A large yard and a tree are visible in the foreground. The Board of Guardians, the governing board of the Guardians of the Poor, established in 1782 and abolished in 1877, oversaw the operations of the almshouse, including admissions, accounts, and employment of the poor. Description: Advertisement showing a busy street scene with a view of the refinery complex in Northern Liberties. Includes the office building adorned with signage "Ficken & Williams Steam Sugar Refinery" attached to the large multi-storied processing plant of several connected buildings marked at the corner "Crown St." and "William St." Smoke stacks and a large American flag adorn the facility. Two men converse at the doorway of the office across from a horse-drawn carriage parked in the street that is congested with refinery traffic. Several drays, some loaded with barrels, and a cart loaded with coal travel to and from the refinery. Title: Passenger Railroad Relief Association of Philadelphia [certificate]
Description: Certificate for the mutual aid association incorporated in 1859 containing seven vignettes showing street cars and street car depots and stations. Two untitled views flank the certificate text. One shows a horse-drawn omnibus traveling during the night by lantern (left) and the other shows a brightly painted and elegantly detailed steam powered street car (right). The steam powered car passes a couple in the doorway of the "Duval" lithography studio. Other vignettes show passenger railroad depots at “Race & Vine Sts.”; “Second & Third Sts.”; “Tenth & Eleventh Sts,”; “Ridge Avenue”; and “Fifth & Sixth Sts." Views include omnibuses parked in and arriving and departing from the depots; pedestrian and street traffic, including ladies on promenade, a man herding a flock of sheep, and a horse-drawn carriage; and neighboring buildings. Race Street view also includes a bridge and Fifth Street view includes train traffic in the background. Other incidental figures include a man seated on a chair and conversing on the sidewalk; two men leaning on the fence of a stable yard; and two young men descending a street enbankment. Also includes at the top of the print an eagle holding an American shield in its claws and a banner in its beak. Banner reads “Instituted Nov. 27, 1858. Incorporated March 30th 1859." Twigs covered with vines separate the graphic elements.
