Description: Advertisement print showing the factory complex on the 400 block of North Fifth Street. Complex includes a three-story building marked "Wm. Dunlap No. 169 Carriage Maker"; wood-gated courtyard; and a two-story building, probably including a showroom, adorned with signage reading ""Wm. Dunlaps' Coach Factory." A couple enters an entryway of the smaller building that also contains signage advertising "E.W. Pearce Saddle & Harness Maker." Title: [Wm. D. Rogers' coach manufactory, Sixth and Brown Streets, Philadelphia] Warranted twelve months
Description: Advertisement showing the two-story factory adorned with signage on the 800 block of North Sixth Street near Spring Garden. A boy pulls a carriage out of one of the two entries to the building (Sixth Street) as patrons inspect a different model of coach being pushed out by a factory worker at the other. A family walks between the coaches and other carriages are visible inside. Around the corner (Brown Street), on the sidewalk, two gentlemen converse and a couple peers into a factory window. Near the rear of the factory, a laborer transports a sack on his back near a strolling couple past a hackney displayed on a one-story addition. In the street, a driver tries to reign in his speeding carriage occupied by a couple that is being chased by a barking dog as a boy works on the wheel of a factory carriage nearby. A pedestrian watches the scene from the corner. Also shows hitching posts lining the sidewalks and a smaller factory with several smokestacks in the right background. Description: Advertisement showing the five-story corner property tenanted by the plumbing and gas fitting establishment of William Wright, John C. Hunter, J.H. McFetrich, and Thomas Brown at 900 Walnut Street. Seventeen bays of windows extend the length of the property on Ninth Street. Two women and a young girl stand in front of an unidentified property adorned by a metal skeleton for an awning (left). One man drives a horse-drawn cart north on Ninth Street, while another unloads goods from a dray. Two gentlemen wearing long coats and top hats stand at the Walnut Street entrance to the plumbing store. One of them grasps the handle of a pump in the doorway. Chandeliers and other wares are visible through the large shop windows. Two white horses are hitched to a closed cab stopped in front of the entrance, and a horse-drawn omnibus is partially visible in the background. Title: Citizens Volunteer Hospital Association of Philadelphia. Instituted, September 5th 1862 Erected September 5th 1862 for temporary relief of sick and wounded soldiers, arriving in and passing through Philadelphia. Closed August 9th 1865
Description: Certificate containing a view showing a bustling street scene around the hospital situated opposite the Philadelphia, Wilmington, and Baltimore Railroad depot at the corner of Broad Street and Washington Avenue. On the sidewalk, soldiers converse, men and women pedestrians stroll, and a female peddler and vendor sell their goods and wares, the latter patronized by Zouaves. In the street, medical personnel and doctors accompany injured soldiers, by stretcher, foot, and on crutches toward the hospital. Men, women, and children walk, converse, and greet each other, and horse-drawn carriages, including possibly an ambulance, travel past and stop near the hospital. Children include a boy carrying a basket and two attempting to help a man with his valise. Also shows surrounding buildings in the background. Title: Dunlaps'[sic] Phoenix Coach Works, corner of Fifth & Buttonwood Streets, Philadelphia
Description: Advertisement showing the industrial complex for the "Phoenix Coach Works" on the 400 block of Buttonwood Street. Complex includes a four-story main building, adorned with street signs, connected to additions and the "General Coach Furnishing Store." Several smokestacks and a tower decorated with the model of a carriage adorn the roof. Signage reading "Phoenix Coach Works" adorns one of the additions, which contains a rooftop crossover to the main building in addition to an entry, adorned with the figures of lions, to a courtyard. Description: Advertisement showing the stove works founded in 1851 on the 400 block of Brown Street in Northern Liberties. Works include a four-story building containing the "office" and adorned with a cupola, a large work yard, and a rear "Foundry." At the multi-story building, a laborer loads stoves that are lined on the sidewalk into a horse-drawn wagon under the eye of a man at the doorway. On the roof, two other men stand in the cupola that is adorned with a statue of Liberty. In the adjacent work yard, laborers shovel and pick at mounds of coal and bricks, and load and transport hand- and horse-drawn carts on the grounds and up a ramp leading to an opening in the foundry. Near the workers, a group of men, one leaning on a shovel convenes and two boys chase each other over a mound. On the sidewalk, men, women, and children pedestrians stroll past a street lamp, watch the workers, and converse near a dog sniffing a fire hydrant. Description: Advertisement containing views of the "Factory at 13th & Parrish Sts." and the factory and showroom, i.e., "Old Stand No. 9, Sth. Sixth St." Factory view shows the bustling "George S. Watson Coach Factory" complex with workshops, courtyard, and sheds surrounded by a wood fence on the 800 block of North 13th Street. Within the courtyard, wheelwrights work on a wheel propped up next to a blazing fire as another worker walks past with a watering can. Other workers retrieve planks of wood from piles loaded in a shed and attend to a carriage. Carriage parts, a horse in a single stall, and piles of wood surround the workers. Within the workshops, carriages and coaches and metalworkers at a forge are visible. A wagon maker also works on a few vehicles placed on a balcony attached to the upper floor of the main workshop. Refinery reestablished and expanded as the Harrison & Newhall Refinery circa 1855 at 409 Race Street. Description: Lovely bird's eye view looking east toward the city from Belmont Mansion, the former estate of Judge Richard Peters. In the foreground, visitors to the property partake of the grounds that are landscaped with trees and small gardens. Elegantly-attired men, women, and children stroll; appreciate the vista from benches and chairs; and enjoy refreshments at tables. Other patrons depart in horse-drawn carriages down a path that winds past the Belmont Water Works and Columbia Railroad Bridge. A train approaches the bridge. In the right background, the proposed Centennial Exhibition buildings, and grounds congested with visitors, are visible in West Fairmount Park. The Main Hall and Memorial Hall predominate. In the left background, the expansive cityscape dominates the view and includes Girard College, the Fairmount Water Works, Gas Works, Rodeph Shalom Synagogue, the Cathedral of S.S. Peter and Paul, Masonic Temple, and the future City Hall. Church steeples, industrial smokestacks, blocks of brick buildings, and the distant Delaware River comprise the vista as well. Also visible are the several bridges that span the Schuylkill River.
