Title: World's Dispensary Medical Association. Proprietors of Dr. Pierce's family medicines. Buffalo, N.Y
Description: Letterhead containing a montage of images, including an exterior view of the dispensary factory, the company trademark, and pictorial details. Exterior view also shows street and pedestrian traffic, including horse-drawn carriages. Trademark shows Asclepius standing on a globe. Details include a palm leaf. Dr. Ray Pierce, a Buffalo eclectic medical doctor, had from the late 1860s been manufacturing patent medicines, such as Dr. Pierce’s smart weed and pleasant pellets. He organized a dispensary of “medical gentlemen” in 1873 and in 1878 opened The Invalids' and Tourists' Hotel in Buffalo for the treatment of chronic diseases. In 1879 he merged the Consulting Department of the World's Dispensary with the hotel, and established the World's Dispensary Medical Association., Stamped above image: Dr. Pierce's golden Medical Discovery. Title: Ph. J. Lauber's restaurant, Centennial grounds, near Horticultural Hall
Description: Illustration on recto depicts a bird's eye view of Lauber's restaurant on the Centennial grounds in West Fairmount Park in Philadelphia. Includes pedestrians and horse-drawn coaches in the foreground. The Cenntenial, held in 1876, celebrated America’s one-hundredth anniversary of independence and showcased the strengths of the country’s industry, manufactures, agriculture, and art., Left vignette on verso shows three buildings comprising the Philip J. Lauber liquor and restaurant business at 24-26 South Fifth Street. The buildings, adorned with signage, include left to right: "Ph. Lauber Beer & Ale"; "Ph. Lauber Importer of Wines"; and "Ph. Description: View looking south at the front elevation of the residence built in 1835 after designs by Thomas Walter Ustick for railroad executive Matthew Newkirk at the southwest corner of Thirteenth and Arch streets. Description: View showing George Washington's carriage, also known as the Dunlap-Powel coach or "Washington's White Chariot," in the foreground. Also shows a crowd of spectators standing in the background adjacent to the estate house at the country seat of Judge Richard Peters known as Belmont above Philadelphia (West Fairmount Park). Construction of the main block of the house began in 1743 but was not completed until circa 1751. The estate, originally purchased by William Peters in 1742 was used as a working model farm by his son Richard until Richard's death in 1828. Description: Series of illustrated trade cards promoting George Gill Green's "August Flower" and "Boschee's German Syrup". Four trade cards depict views of Fairmount Park, including one eight-page foldout advertisement containing advertising text pages. Illustrations include the Fairmount Water Works and Resevoir, originally built between 1812 and 1822 after the designs of Philadelphia engineer Frederick Graff. Also shows horse-drawn carriages pulling men and women racing north on East River Drive under the New York Connecting Railway Bridge, built 1866-67 after designs by Joseph A. Wilson for the Pennsylvania Railroad. The Promontory Rock Tunnel, bored in 1871, is visible in the background. Other images include people leisurely rowing on a creek under the bridge to Lansdown Island; park visitors standing on a pathway that overlooks the Schuylkill River from the Fairmount Water Works; and men and women strolling, sitting, and traveling in horse-drawn carriages along Wissahickon Drive. Paragraphs of advertising text promote George Gill Green's "August Flower" as a "natural cathartic" that "corrects the acidity of the stomach," and "it is established fact in every town and village on this continent, that [Boschee's] German Syrup is the only remedy that has given satisfaction in severe cases of Lung Disease." Description: Glass negative showing the De la Plaine House at 5521-5523 Germantown Avenue, a three-story stone building located on the corner and previously owned by the Morris family. The first floor houses a shop with some of its wares displayed outside. A horse-drawn cart stands on the street in front of the building. James De la Plaine settled in Germantown in 1691. Before his death in 1750, he built a house. It was afterward owned by E.B. Paramore and used as a corner store before the Germantown Mutual Fire Insurance Company bought the property in 1885. Title: Our [Deshler-Morris] house [4782 Main Street] from the other side of Market Sq. [Germantown]
Description: Glass negative showing the Deshler-Morris House at 5442 Germantown Avenue, a two-story house with shuttered windows and ivy climbing up the walls. A horse-drawn carriage stands in front of the home. A fenced lawn is across the street. David Deshler built the original four-room summer cottage on this Germantown lot in 1752, adding the three-story front addition in 1772. The house was sold to Col. Isaac Franks in 1792 after Deshler’s death. President George Washington rented the home for the duration of the yellow fever epidemic of 1793 and the summer of 1794. Elliston and John Perot purchased the house in 1804, selling it to Elliston’s son-in-law Samuel B. Morris after his death in 1834. The house stayed in the possession of the Morris family for over a century, when Elliston P. Morris donated the house to the National Parks Service in 1948. Title: Market Square Street from library window. Old Church & Harkness House
Description: Glass negative showing a view of Market Square separating the Market Square Presbyterian Church and Fromberger-Harkness House from a brick road. Trees grow in planters on the sidewalk while grass and small shrubs grow in the square. A lamppost stands on the street corner while a horse-drawn cart waits in front of the house on the opposite side of the square. The view is seen from the second-story window of the Deshler-Morris House at 5442 Germantown Avenue. First called The Green, Market Square was established from land originally owned by James De la Plaine as early as 1703. As a center of community activity, Market Square contained not only market stalls but also the prison and stocks. Samuel B. Morris planted many of the Square’s original trees. Named for John Fromberger and Mary Warden Harkness, the Fromberger-Harkness House was built as late as 1795. It was occupied variously by St. Luke’s Protestant Episcopal Church (1813-1837), the Young Women’s Christian Association of Germantown (1873-1915), Mary Warden Harkness Boarding Home for Girls (1917-1941), the Germantown Fire Insurance Company (1954-1964), and the Germantown Insurance Co. (1964). Originally built as a Dutch Reformed Church circa 1710, the Market Square Presbyterian Church became a German Reformed Church by 1732. The building was razed and rebuilt in 1838-1839, and then enlarged in 1857. The congregation, led by pastor Jacob Helffenstein, withdrew from the Reformed Church in 1855, become Presbyterian in 1858. In 1888, the church was rebuilt after the designs of architect George T. Pearson. Description: Advertisement showing the stove works founded in 1851 on the 400 block of Brown Street in Northern Liberties. Works include a four-story building containing the "office" and adorned with a cupola, a large work yard, and a rear "Foundry." At the multi-story building, a laborer loads stoves that are lined on the sidewalk into a horse-drawn wagon under the eye of a man at the doorway. On the roof, two other men stand in the cupola that is adorned with a statue of Liberty. In the adjacent work yard, laborers shovel and pick at mounds of coal and bricks, and load and transport hand- and horse-drawn carts on the grounds and up a ramp leading to an opening in the foundry. Near the workers, a group of men, one leaning on a shovel convenes and two boys chase each other over a mound. On the sidewalk, men, women, and children pedestrians stroll past a street lamp, watch the workers, and converse near a dog sniffing a fire hydrant. In the street, drivers guide horse-drawn carts, a drayman travels, and a pedestrian crosses in the path of an "Abbott & Lawrence Liberty stove Works" wagon and speeding carriage occupied by a family of three. Description: Advertisement containing views of the "Factory at 13th & Parrish Sts." and the factory and showroom, i.e., "Old Stand No. 9, Sth. Sixth St." Factory view shows the bustling "George S. Watson Coach Factory" complex with workshops, courtyard, and sheds surrounded by a wood fence on the 800 block of North 13th Street. Within the courtyard, wheelwrights work on a wheel propped up next to a blazing fire as another worker walks past with a watering can. Other workers retrieve planks of wood from piles loaded in a shed and attend to a carriage. Carriage parts, a horse in a single stall, and piles of wood surround the workers. Title: Continental Hotel, Philadelphia Pa
Description: View looking southeast from above Ninth Street showing the luxury hotel at the corner of Ninth and Chestnut streets. Completed in 1860 after the designs of John McArthur, Jr., the hotel contained several businesses in its lower level, including "Charles Oakford & Son" hat shop and "VanSant's Manufactory of French Confections." The building was demolished in 1924. Also visible on the commercial street are a shirt manufactory and a looking glass store. A street lamp advertising the Walnut Street Theater stands on the corner of the sidewalk jammed with pedestrians. Title: Continental Hotel, Philada
Description: View looking southeast from above Ninth Street showing the luxury hotel at the corner of Ninth and Chestnut streets. Completed in 1860 after the designs of John McArthur, Jr., the hotel contained several businesses in its lower level, including "Charles Oakford & Son" hat shop and "Vansant's Manufactory of French Confections." The building was demolished in 1924. Also visible on the commercial street are a shirt manufactory and a looking glass store. A street lamp advertising the Walnut Street Theater stands on the corner of the sidewalk jammed with pedestrians. Title: Lincoln Monument, foot of Lemon Hill
Description: View showing the Lincoln Monument at the entrance (Kelly and Lemon Hill Drives) of Fairmount Park surrounded by men who stand and look at the viewer, including white men spectators and three men guards, one possibly African American, attired in caps with insignia pinned to their lapels, and holding swords. In the right, two white men sit within a horse-drawn carriage. Sculpted by Randolph Rogers, Abraham Lincoln is depicted seated with a quill in his hand after just signing the Emancipation Proclamation. The statue rests upon a pedestal adorned with sculpted garland, bronze eagles, and the City of Philadelphia’s Coat of Arms. The granite base is adorned with four panels inscribed with a dedication to and quotes from Lincoln of which two are visible. Unveiled in September 1871, the monument was commissioned by the Lincoln Monument Association, one of the first such associations formed in the country to raise funds for a city monument in memory of Lincoln. Description: Photograph showing the De la Plaine House at 5521-5523 Germantown Avenue, a three-story stone building previously owned by the Morris family. The first floor houses a shop with some of its wares displayed outside. A horse-drawn cart stands on the street in front of the building. James De la Plaine settled in Germantown in 1691. Before his death in 1750, he built a house. It was afterward owned by E.B. Paramore and used as a corner store before the Germantown Mutual Fire Insurance Company bought the property in 1885. Description: Advertisement with heavy street activity showing the Harrison & Newhall Refinery, formerly the Penington Sugar Refinery. Refinery reestablished and expanded as the Harrison & Newhall Refinery circa 1855 at 409 Race Street. In front of the refinery, laborers load horse-drawn drays with barrels as another man in an apron leads another dray past the fenced northwest corner of Race and Crown streets (former residence of Edward Penington). At that corner, a man leans on a street lamp across from a man on horseback in the street and two street urchins on the sidewalk eyeing a well-dressed couple. At the other end of the street, a traffic jam occurs as the barrels on the dray of a rambunctious horse roll off the vehicle in front of a horse-drawn cart and omnibus. A horse-handler and displaced carriage driver discuss the accident in the street as a peddler, the possible cause of the commotion, nonchalantly carries a tray of wares on his head past the scene. Also shows barrels being hoisted outside of the refinery building. Description: Advertisement showing heavy pedestrian and street activity in front of the large, prominent hotel opened in 1826 following the conversion by John Rea of several properties at 419-423 Chestnut Street. Several carriages, including one marked "U.S. Hotel" line up in front of the hotel. A group of men stand near the entranceway as other guests exit doorways and stand on the verandah. Signage for businesses tenanting the lower floor of the eastern section of the hotel is visible. Businesses include M. J. & C. Croll, tailor; G. W. Duffy's, fashionable hat & cap store; Blanchard & Rock, paper hangings. View includes adjacent buildings, including Farmers & Mechanics Bank (425-429) and W. Christie, upholsterer (411). Couples exit some of the storefronts, individuals promenade on the sidewalk, and a woman talks to two men at the steps of the bank. Also shows a coach traveling in the street near a running dog; two men conversing; two delivery boys, one with a basket standing near a well-dressed man walking and holding a small sack in his hand; and an African American laborer pushing a hand-cart loaded with a crate. Title: Passenger Railroad Relief Association of Philadelphia [certificate]
Description: Certificate for the mutual aid association incorporated in 1859 containing seven vignettes showing street cars and street car depots and stations. Two untitled views flank the certificate text. One shows a horse-drawn omnibus traveling during the night by lantern (left) and the other shows a brightly painted and elegantly detailed steam powered street car (right). The steam powered car passes a couple in the doorway of the "Duval" lithography studio. Other vignettes show passenger railroad depots at “Race & Vine Sts.”; “Second & Third Sts.”; “Tenth & Eleventh Sts,”; “Ridge Avenue”; and “Fifth & Sixth Sts." Views include omnibuses parked in and arriving and departing from the depots; pedestrian and street traffic, including ladies on promenade, a man herding a flock of sheep, and a horse-drawn carriage; and neighboring buildings. Race Street view also includes a bridge and Fifth Street view includes train traffic in the background. Other incidental figures include a man seated on a chair and conversing on the sidewalk; two men leaning on the fence of a stable yard; and two young men descending a street enbankment. Also includes at the top of the print an eagle holding an American shield in its claws and a banner in its beak. Banner reads “Instituted Nov. 27, 1858. Incorporated March 30th 1859."
