Description: Illustration on recto of specimen sheet/price list depicting the factory for the printing establishment at 1525 Orthodox Street (corner of Orthodox and Franklin (later Griscom) Streets). Description: Glass negative showing exterior view from Independence Square of the Philadelphia Dispensary's third building, built in 1801, at 127 South Fifth Street, with partial views of adjacent buildings including the Mercantile Library building (125 South Fifth Street), occupied by the American Bank Note Company at the time of this photograph, and the offices of F. Cooper Shapely (129 South Fifth Street). Boys sit and stand in front of the dispensary building while a horse-drawn Knickerbocker Ice Company cart is parked in front of the Bank Note Company. Founded in 1786 by Benjamin Rush, the dispensary provided medical attention to the indigent sick. Morris. Founded in 1786, the Dispensary provided in-home care to the indigent sick and specialized in inoculation against smallpox. Doctors donated their time to the institution, providing medicine to patients free of charge, in return for medical experience. After renting properties near Chestnut and Strawberry streets, the Dispensary constructed its own out-patient clinic at 127 South Fifth Street in 1801. The plan of the Dispensary shows a “Prescribing Room,” an apothecary shop, and a room for patients on the ground floor, and a Manager’s Room, Library, and three bedrooms on the second floor. Title: Monument & Square from our front steps, [Germantown]
Description: Glass negative showing the Civil War monument in the center of Market Square from the steps of the Deshler-Morris House at 5442 Germantown Avenue. The monument is comprised of a carved pedestal and a statue of a man. A horse-drawn carriage travels down the cobblestone street adjacent to the Square while a dog runs the opposite way. First called The Green, Market Square was established from land originally owned by James De la Plaine as early as 1703. As a center of community activity, Market Square contained not only market stalls but also the prison and stocks. Samuel B. Morris planted many of the Square’s original trees. Prominent buildings situated around the Square include the Deshler-Morris House, the German Reformed Church, and the Fromberger-Harkness House. The Market Square monument, built in 1883, commemorates the contributions of soldiers to the Civil War. Designed as a Union soldier, it rests on a pedestal made from granite taken from Devil’s Den, Gettysburg. The fence surrounding the monument was constructed from old musket barrels and bayonets. Description: View of the commercial street, above Tenth Street, south side. Businesses include: Clark's Heating & Ventilating Warehouse at 1008 Market Street; Dale & Thomas, carpets, at 1010 Market Street; James Spear & Co., stoves, heaters, and ranges at 1014 Market Street; William Ray, clothier, at 1018 Market Street; William F. Simes, saddlery and harnessmaker, at 1026 Market Street; and the Bingham House hotel (named after express and freight agent John Bingham), established in 1867, at the corner of 11th and Market streets. Title: Bergner & Engel's Brewery. Office, 412 Library Street. Brewery, 32d and Thompson Sts. Philadelphia Gustavus Bergner. Charles Engel
Description: Advertisement containing a view of the hectic brewery complex in Northwest Philadelphia, i.e. Brewerytown. Complex includes an office building and dwelling (right), two ice houses (built 1865 and 1871, left), brewery plant, sheds, and courtyard. Outside of the plant, several Bergner & Engel horse-drawn wagons loaded with barrels travel in the street. The vehicles pass carriages, a man on horseback, two unoccupied drivers consulting each other, and a man, probably a brewery worker, seated on barrels talking with a man, possibly a job seeker, who has a carpetbag and a dog at his side. On the sidewalk, women, children, and gentlemen stroll, as brewery laborers work around them. Men load a wagon with barrels from one of the ice houses, as others coordinate the wagons (two excited dogs at his sides), carry barrels, and calm a horse at the courtyard entrance. Near the entrance, Mr. Bergner stands outside his office by his parked carriage and listens to an employee. Barrels line the wall of the courtyard. Within the space, loaded company wagons arrive, idle wagons and crate beds are stored, and laborers move barrels, including one from a huge pile on the terrace of the keg washing room attached to the second ice house. A grove of trees borders the complex in the left of the image. The partnership of Bergner & Engel was formed in 1870 at the brewery of Bergner (erected 1857-1858) following the dissolution of the partnership of brewers Wolf & Engel. Description: Illustrated billheads containing ornate lettering, pictorial and ornamental details, and a vignette exterior view of the sign-covered, five-story storefront of the firm established by Joseph D. Marshall, and Robert T. Marshall circa 1870. Signage reads "Paints, Oils & Glass. Coal Oil. J.D. Marshall & Bro. Drugs and Chemicals." View also shows a horse-drawn wagon and carriage in the street and partial views of adjacent buildings. Pictorial and ornamental details include a mortar and pestle in a shield-shaped frame and art-noveau-style borders decorated with garlands, a vase, and sprigs of leaves. Prints also contains lists of products sold by the firm, including Anchor Varnish Works and Hubbard Varnish Works, Annatta, Lamp Chimneys, Pure Neatsfoot Oil, Sweet Oil, and "Spts Turpentine."
