- View of the prominent hotel erected in 1868 at 1500-1506 Chestnut Street. White men and women pedestrians stroll the sidewalk, and an African American man passes by on his horse-drawn cart. Businesses line Chestnut Street, including: George E. Dearborn, piano dealer; a paper hangings store; and a custom shirt proprietor. The hotel, named after the previously existing "Colonnade Row" of early nineteenth-century pillared, porched townhouses, was demolished in 1925 for the erection of the Franklin Trust Company building. - View of the lush grounds of the mission begun in the Black emigrant colony of Liberia in 1835 to educate and spread the gospel in Africa. Depicts the "mission houses," "school house," houses of a "native laborer" and "a colonist," and "native cattle broken to the yoke." A Black man guides a cattle-drawn cart on the dirt road outside of the fenced mission fields where Black laborers work. Begun under the auspices of the American Colonization Society and the Domestic and Foreign Missionary Society of the Protestant Episcopal Church, the mission moved on March 4, 1837 to Mt. Robinson, married to Washington U.S. Treasury clerk Rollinson Colburn, lived in the Capitol between circa 1870 and her death in 1912. In 1887 eight of her works, some purported to be based on her own eye-witness accounts during the 1870s, showing African American life in the city were published as a collectible series of photographs. - Series of trade cards promoting the Domestic Sewing Machine Co. "Make no mistake you buy a domestic" depicts two white women, one tall and the other of short stature, who carry parasols and converse. "Wes don got de "domestic" we has!" depicts a racist, comic genre scene of an African American couple, portrayed in racist caricature with exaggerated features, who have acquired a sewing machine. In the center is a man and woman in a blue-colored cart being pulled by a galloping brown horse. The man, attired in a top hat; a blue jacket; a white collared shirt; and green checked pants, strains and leans forward as he holds the reins. The woman, attired in a yellow dress with black polka dots and a pink bonnet, leans back and exclaims in the vernacular that "wes don got the Domestic, we has!" She raises her left hand in the air and holds a white handkerchief. A sewing machine is visible inside the cart. In the far right a barefooted boy attired in a straw hat; a white collared shirt; and brown pants rolled up to his calves, possibly their displaced son, runs beside the wagon. In the top right corner is an inset illustration of a Domestic Sewing Machine Co.’s sewing machine. - Cartoon of a funeral procession portraying the erosion of Democratic support for presidential hopeful Martin Van Buren, the "Kinderhook Fox," during the election of 1844. Depicts President Tyler, instrumental in Van Buren's defeat, stating, "Thus do all our hopes end in Clay," as he steers a funeral cart carrying Van Buren, depicted as a dead fox; his son, poet Robert Tyler; and a bale of cabbages. The cart is pulled by Andrew Jackson, depicted as an old nag boasting about his part in Van Buren's death. Drays, surreys, "Rogers" delivery carts, and a young African American man with a horse traverse the intersection. A white man passenger disembarks from a Sixth Street line horse-drawn omnibus near the factory entrance. A second omnibus rests at the corner, the white man driver unhappily receiving a citation from a white man constable; his young, white boy passenger watching with a look of awe sitting beside his mother. Rogers, the business established in 1846, and the factory erected in 1853, absorbed rival manufactory George W. Watson in 1870. In the center, the older, balding peddler speaks to an African American family at the door of their cottage house. The man is portrayed with exaggerated features, wears spectacles, and is attired in a purple coat; a white shirt; yellow pants; and brown shoes. A goat eats red cloth pulled out from underneath his coat. On the ground in front of him is his top hat turned upside-down. Papers are placed inside of it. He leans forward to speak with the African American woman in the doorway. His hands are out like he is displaying an object. B. Lippincott in 1849. Shows the block of buildings (10-20 North Fourth Street) covered in signage and including Barcroft, Beaver & Co., dry good dealers and S. M. Day, wholesale combs, brush and fancy goods trimmings (10); Goff & Peterson, importers and manufacturers of saddlery, carriage, and harness trimmings (12); Grigg, Elliot & Co. (14); C. H. & Geo. Abbott, dealers and importers of hardware and cutlery and C. Ahrenfeldt & Co., importers of toys & fancy goods (16); C. B. Partial views of the adjacent buildings and a nearby alley with a laborer and push cart are also visible.
