Description: Landscape view looking from the west bank of the Schuylkill River showing the Fairmount Water Works. Shows the old engine house; old mill house; new mill house (completed 1862); and the observatory tower arch (built 1860), stand pipe (built 1852), and pavilion on Reservoir Hill. Also includes the Schuylkill Canal lock, the Wire Suspension Bridge at Fairmount, and the dome of the Cathedral Basilica of SS. Peter and Paul. Title: Buildings of the Great Central Fair, in aid of the U. S. Sanitary Commission Logan Square, Philadelphia, June 1864
Description: Bird's-eye view of the exhibition grounds at Logan Square that was printed and for sale daily by P.S. Duval's establishment at the fair. Shows the square and surrounding cityscape from the northwest, including the Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul. Trees are visible beside the buildings and line the outside of the square where throngs of people walk the sidewalk and crowd the fair entrances. Horse-drawn vehicles, including carriages and omnibuses travel the streets and park along the grounds. Also shows deer and a peacock grazing in a pasture near the tented rotunda of the Horticultural Department. American flags labeled "U.S.S.C." adorn all of the buildings. Wrigley designed the majority of the fair buildings except for the central thoroughfare, which was designed by Strickland Kneass. Description: Exterior view showing the Roman-Corinthian-style Catholic cathedral built 1846-1864 after the designs of Napoleon Le Brun (interior) and John Notman (exterior) on Eighteenth Street, north of Race Street. Includes the adjacent "Episcopal Residence" and "Seminary of St. Charles Borremes" (i.e., Borremeo). Several pedestrians, including couples on promenade, walk on the sidewalk in front of the buildings. Parishioners ascend the steps of the cathedral, and a woman and child cross and horse-drawn carriages travel in the street. Description: Exterior view showing the Roman-Corinthian-style Catholic cathedral built 1846-1864 after the designs of Napoleon Le Brun (interior) and John Notman (exterior) on Eighteenth Street, north of Race Street. Contains four columns at the entrance above which the quote "Ad Majorem Del Gloraim" is inscribed, four niches adorned with statuary on the front elevation, two small spires, and a large dome to the rear of the building.
