Collection of 5 chromolithograph puzzle blocks and 5 duplicate unmounted, uncut chromolithographs showing prominent buildings at the Centennial Exhibition of 1876 during different times of the day and weather conditions. Buildings include the Art Gallery, Machinery Hall, Horticultural Hall, Agricultural Hall, and the Main Building. Views include heavy pedestrian traffic, visitors traveling the grounds by carriage, fountains, statuary, and variant skyscapes. Main Building view also shows a troop of marching soldiers and several street cars, including a "Fairmount Park" vehicle. Majority of the buildings were built after the designs of Herman Schwartzmann, Henry Pettit and Joseph M. Wilson. Lovely bird's eye view looking east toward the city from Belmont Mansion, the former estate of Judge Richard Peters. In the foreground, visitors to the property partake of the grounds that are landscaped with trees and small gardens. Elegantly-attired men, women, and children stroll; appreciate the vista from benches and chairs; and enjoy refreshments at tables. Other patrons depart in horse-drawn carriages down a path that winds past the Belmont Water Works and Columbia Railroad Bridge. A train approaches the bridge. In the right background, the proposed Centennial Exhibition buildings, and grounds congested with visitors, are visible in West Fairmount Park. The Main Hall and Memorial Hall predominate. In the left background, the expansive cityscape dominates the view and includes Girard College, the Fairmount Water Works, Gas Works, Rodeph Shalom Synagogue, the Cathedral of S.S. Peter and Paul, Masonic Temple, and the future City Hall. Church steeples, industrial smokestacks, blocks of brick buildings, and the distant Delaware River comprise the vista as well. Also visible are the several bridges that span the Schuylkill River. Elaborate Centennial Exhibition commemorative print depicting an arched monument containing a central full-length portrait of George Washington surrounded by vignettes; allegorical figures; and religious quotes by the first president. Washington is depicted mounted on his horse. Arch is adorned with the names of the 38 states and is flanked by columns containing views representing the industries of the North, East, South, and West. Views show a white man laborer of the North chopping a tree at a waterfront, white women loom workers of the East, an overseer on horseback watching an enslaved African American man picking cotton in the South, and a white man farmer reaping his harvest with a horse-drawn plow in the West. Columns also contain allegorical figures to represent the years 1776 and 1876. Justice and Independence (depicted as white women and holding the Declaration), and a prostrate British soldier represent the year 1776 and Peace and Liberty (depicted as white woman and holding a "Ballot"), and a seated enslaved African American man free from his shackles represent the year 1876. Monument also contains views of Independence Hall and Memorial Hall (Centennial Exhibition), the scene showing the signing of the Declaration of Independence, and allegorical figures and emblems symbolizing the classical and industrial arts.
