Title: Riot in Philadelphia July 7, 1844
Description: Discrepant news print showing a battle scene from the second series of anti-Catholic riots in Philadelphia in July 1844 that stemmed from the defensive arming of St. Philip de Neri Catholic Church in preparation of a July 4 Nativist party parade. Shows the melee around the city militia under attack from the Protestant rioters depicted as gentlemen in top hats and coats. In the foreground, a rioter picks up a brick as his compatriots fire at a charging band of militiamen near an illuminated lamppost. One soldier lays fallen on the ground as a rioter collapses over him. To the right, a mother flees with her children as men fight hand-to-hand in front of a group of onlookers. The crowd watches another band of militia attempt to guard the targeted Catholic church that is marked "I.H.S. A.D., 1840." In the background, rioters and the militia fire cannons at one another. In actuality, rioters gained control and set the church on fire by the morning of July 7, causing the militia to try and clear a neighboring street on which the combat and cannon fire occurred. Description: View showing the stone edifice of St. James Church, the church's first building, constructed in 1851 after the designs of John T. Mahoney at the southeast corner of Thirty-eighth and Chestnut Streets and two adjacent structures, possibly the church rectory and orphans' home. Description: Glass negative showing the Market Square Presbyterian Church across Germantown Avenue and Market Square from the front gate of the Deshler-Morris House. A metal fence surrounds the square which houses the Civil War monument on the left side of the frame. Two men stand next to the fence near a lamppost, including Policeman Saddington. Various buidlings, including the church, line the street on the opposite side of the park. First called The Green, Market Square was established from land originally owned by James De la Plaine as early as 1703. As a center of community activity, Market Square contained not only market stalls but also the prison and stocks. Samuel B. Morris planted many of the Square’s original trees. Prominent buildings situated around the Square include the Deshler-Morris House, the German Reformed Church, and the Fromberger-Harkness House. The Market Square monument, built in 1883, commemorates the contributions of soldiers to the Civil War. Designed as a Union soldier, it rests on a pedestal made from granite taken from Devil’s Den, Gettysburg. The fence surrounding the monument was constructed from old musket barrels and bayonets. Cannons used during the war stand beside the monument. Originally built as a Dutch Reformed Church circa 1710, the Market Square Presbyterian Church became a German Reformed Church by 1732. The building was razed and rebuilt in 1838-1839, and then enlarged in 1857. The congregation, led by pastor Jacob Helffenstein, withdrew from the Reformed Church in 1855 and became Presbyterian in 1858. In 1888, the church was rebuilt after the designs of architect George T. Pearson.
