Bottles, small boxes, and broadside advertisements, predominately for French cordials and bitters, fill the display window, and a large model cask with advertising text and stacks of labeled boxes flank the open entrance. Title: Charles Oakford's model hat store, 158, Chestnut Street Philadelphia. Hats, caps and furs, wholesale and retail
Description: Advertisement showing the ornately furnished interior of a later store, at 624 Chestnut Street, of the the hat establishment established by Oakford in 1827. Fitting tables adorned with lavish free standing light fixtures in front of glass display cases filled with men's hats line the sides of the room. In the foreground, Oakford assists a patron seated at one of the tables on top of which a number of hats lie. Behind the men, a clerk pulls a hat from one of the cases. In the background, in front of another fitting table on which hats sit, a clerk and gentleman patron stand and discuss hats in their hands. A third gentleman patron watches the exchange from across the aisle. An arch labeled "Oakford" is visible to the center of the room that leads to the women's and children's section at the rear of the store. Description: Advertisement showing street and pedestrian activity in front of the four-story corner storefront, with signage, for the jewelry and watch store at 112, i.e., 316 Chestnut Street. A sign illustrated with a watch and reading "No. 112 John C. Farr& Co. Wholesale and Retail" adorns the side of the building above a window with a shade advertising watches, jewelry, and silverware. At the store entrance, a clerk greets two ladies and a girl between the display windows filled with silverware, jewelry, and watches. Description: Advertisement looking down the alley way of the brewery, also known as Eagle Brewery, established in 1829. Includes the "Pale Ale Brewery Counting House" (left) and adjoining and adjacent processing buildings. In the foreground, within the doorway of the red brick counting house, a clerk interacts with a drayman. The brewery employee hands the driver a small piece of paper as the deliveryman also holds the reigns of his horse harnessed to a dray loaded with beer barrels. The horse wears blinders. Description: Advertisement showing the five-story offices and storefront known as the Girard Building (102-104, i.e., 306-308 Chestnut) tenanted by Goodyears, i.e., the Philadelphia warehouse of the New York Belting and Packing Company (104), "Peterson's Book Establishment," i.e., the store of publisher T.B. Peterson & Brothers, and C. J. Peterson, publisher of Peterson' Ladies national magazine (102). Lettering reading "Goodyears Rubber Packing & Belting Company" adorns the roof of the building. Through the open entryways and large display windows, clerks, patrons, and merchandise displays are visible in both stores. At Peterson's, clerks assist patrons with items from bookshelves surrounding the room in addition to a centrally located U-shaped display counter labeled "Peterson's Magazine." Stacks of books are displayed near the windows that contain promotions "Subscriptions for all Magazines" and "Chas. Dickens Complete Works." At Goodyears, a white man clerk stands at a counter in front of rows of shelves as he attends to a customer. A large model boot, shoes, and rubber toys adorn the display windows that are adorned with the company trademark and read "Goodyears Patent." Description: Advertisement showing a view of the marble yard fronted by a triple arch adorned with plaques, the adjoining three-story office building, and rear factory of the establishment at Green Street above 7th Street. From the sidewalk, decorated as black and white tile, a lady, holding a parasol, and a gentleman admire several ornate obelisks and monuments within the fenced, arched yard. Several of the pieces are adorned with patriotic details, urns, and statuary. Plaques on the arches include the name of the business in addition to text reading "Every Description of Monumental Works Executed" and "Plain & Carved Mantels of Every Description." Under the third arch and entrance to the yard, a clerk and patron talk near slabs of marble propped against the wall of the office building. Behind the men, a laborer hauls a large monument by a dolly into the factory yard. More monuments, including animal sculpture and statuary, are displayed in the fenced court, upper balcony, and Gothic-style windows of the adjacent office building. A female patron walks between the marble pieces down a pathway toward a clerk standing at the entrance. An American eagle sculpture adorns the arches and an American flag adorns the office. Title: [Robert Shoemaker's wholesale & retail drugstore, corner of Second and Green Streets, Philadelphia]
Description: Advertisement for the three-and-a-half story storefront, covered in signage, on the 200 block of Green Street. Signs advertise Wetherill's Whitelead, drugs, medicines, paints, oils, glass, dyestuffs, "window glass of all sizes," picture glass, "cheap glass for hot beds," "white lead warranted pure by the ton or pound," ready mixed paints, linseed oil, plasters, pot ash, and soda. A male patron enters one of the two open entryways that are lined with barrels and sacks, some open. Within the store, two clerks, one assisting a customer, stand at the counter. Rows of shelves with pharmaceuticals line the wall behind the men. Several canisters and decanters are displayed in the three showcase windows at the front and side of the building. Within the second floor windows, stacks of boxes are visible. At the street corner, crates and boxes of pharmaceuticals, including indigo and oil of vitrol, line the sidewalk and are loaded on a horse-drawn dray accompanied by the driver. Also shows the open cellar, a model of a mortar and pestle adorning the store, and a partial view of the adjacent business with sign "..olds." Shoemaker operated the drugstore under this name and at this location 1837-1856. Shoemaker apprenticed at the store in the 1830's when operated by William Scattergood. He developed an alternative to homemade plasters and was possibly the first U.S. manufacturer of glycerin. Description: Advertisement showing the four-story double storefronts adorned with signage at 30-32 South Second Street, below Market Street. Massive merchandise displays adorn the windows and front facades of the businesses. At the wareroom, reams of different cloths hang within open windows from rods behind tables covered in swatches and bolts of cloth. A number of patrons, including women and a couple, admire the displays, and enter the open entry through which shadowy figures of female clerks are visible. More merchandise, including bolts of cloth and cloth-covered hat boxes, are visible in showcase spaces on the second floor. At the tea store, couples exit and enter the business in which several boxes of tea are piled between Chinese figurines displayed in the window. A clerk stands within the store. Potted plants adorn the third floor windows between which a large model of a box of tea hangs. In front of the store, boxes of tea are piled under a frame for an awning that displays a sign advertising "Fresh Teas." Manhole covers and a fire hydrant adorn the sidewalk as well. Around the corner of the building, a woman and girl walk past a horse-drawn dray travelling down a side alley to Strawberry Street partially visible in the background. Also shows partial views of adjacent buildings. Pekin Tea Company relocated to Sixth and Callowhill streets in 1847. The textile firm established by Townsend Sharpless in 1815 located to the address in 1841 under the name T. Sharpless & Son. Firm was renamed T. Description: Advertisement showing the three-and-one-half story storefront, covered in advertising text, on the 700 block of Market Street. Advertising reads "The Cheapest Wholesale & Retail Hat and Cap Manufactory in the World. Fashionable Styles. Caps. Hats." A male patron enters one of two open doorways to the establishment, in which a clerk surveys stacks of hats across from a flight of stairs. At the other end of the store, another clerk assists a patron, standing in front of a mirror, as he tries on hats next to shelves of merchandise. Between the entries, men's and boys' hats and caps adorn a display window flanked by cases of "hats" and "caps" displayed outside. Boxes, hats, and milliners at work, are visible at the upper windows. A large model hat and cap adorn the roof of the building. In the street, a horse-drawn dray is positioned to receive a delivery opposite a laborer retrieving a crate labeled "M. Dormitzen Middleton Sch. County" from the store cellar. Labeled crates line the sidewalk with addressees that include "Heitner & Shay Augusta Northumberland Co. Pa."; "T.L. Mitchell Jefferson Co. Pa."; "Young & Lee Allentown Pa."; "Geo. L. Reppler St. Clair Schuykill Co."; and "Geo. Far... Centre Co. Pa." Also shows the attic window of the building displaying signage that reads "Hat and Cap Store," and partial views of adjacent businesses. Title: Lippincott & Co. south west corner of Fourth & Market St Philadelphia
Description: Advertisement showing the red, two-bay, six-story building tenanted by Barclay and Isaac Lippincott's clothing store at the southwest corner of Fourth and Market Streets, marked with pre-consolidation addressed buildings. An advertisement painted in white on the east side of the building reads, "Lippincotts one price clothing warehouse cheap for cash." The same phrase is displayed on the front facade, along with the address, "4th & Market Sts., 130" A large flag reading, "Clothing Lippincott & Co.," flies at the top of the building. Two men stand near a display of shirts, pants, vests, and other articles of clothing under the corner awning. Patrons speak with sales clerks who stand behind counters, in front of shelves that extend to the ceiling. The store's wares cover the shop windows. A man walks with a woman holding a parasol near boxes piled outside of the adjacent, four-story property occupied by Lippincott's Clothing Warehouse (132 Market Street, ie. 402 Market Street). Next to the clothing warehouse, framed engravings are displayed in the partially visible shop window of Thomas, importer of engravings (404 Market Street). A large framed print is prominently advertised on the outside of the shop. A person stands in the front doorway of the building immediately south of Lippincott & Co. on Fourth Street. A woman in a red dress rides a white horse along Market Street, and two dogs stand together in the middle of the street in the foreground., The clothing store operated at this address as Lippincott, Taylor & Co., until 1851 when it became Lippincott & Co. under the ownership of Barclay and Isaac Lippincott. The named changed again in 1860 to Lippincott, Hunter & Scott, with an additional store at 424 Market Street. Title: Northern Liberties' Sugar Refinery
Description: Advertisement showing the three-story office building with an addition and attached to the nine-story "Sugar Refinery" (rear) at the southwest corner of Willow Street and Old York Road, i.e., York Avenue. Signage reading "Rock Candy Manufactory. Isaac Koon's Sugar Refinery" adorns the office in which a stout clerk stands in the doorway. A horse-drawn dray loaded with goods (some labeled K) rests in the street and the drayman walks toward the clerk. A barrel stands next to the side of the office across from a laborer. He walks from an open entryway to the refinery marked "No Admittance." Barrels are visible inside and more barrels in addition to crates are piled in front of the refinery from which smoke spews from the stacks. Description: Advertisement showing the three-and-one-half story building with several windows that is adorned with signage and advertising text for the druggists on the 200 block of Callowhill Street. Signs and text advertise "Drugs, Chemicals, Paints, Oil Glass, and Dye Stuff"; "White-Lead & Window-Glass at Manufacturers Lowest Prices"; and "Alum, Madder, Logwood, Camwood, Indigo, Copperas, Fustic and Turpentine." Patrons, visible through the open doorways, stand at counters within the storefront; jars, and decanters line the display windows; and crates and barrels, some marked, line the sidewalk. At the side of the store, a clerk checks a list as a drayman unloads his horse-drawn vehicle. Also shows the doors open to the cellar of the store that also contains a large-scale model of an apothecary's mortar and pestle and a fire insurance marker.
