Description: Advertisement for the Philadelphia perfumer and ink manufacturer containing an ornate frame comprised of vignettes, pictorial details, and ornaments surrounding ornamented text. Vignettes depict patriotic symbols of the American eagle and U.S. shield and two scenes. Scene in the left shows a gentleman being attended to by his valet. The gentleman has wavy, ear-length, dark hair and wears a blue and red patterned dressing gown. The valet, in a grey suit, looks at a bottle in his gentleman's left hand. The gentleman scratches his head with his right hand. Scene in the right shows a woman, looking down, pulling her fingers through her long dark hair that rests over her shoulders past her waist. She wears a peasant-like dress with a red bodice and green-striped skirt with a paisley pattern. The border also contains scroll-like pictorial details, geometric shaped ornaments, and pattern backgrounds. A thick, blue block of color frames the border like an outline. Harrison, originally a book, map, and ink dealer, began operating his perfumery, including hair dyes, circa 1853. Title: Philadelphia fashions, spring & summer 1845, by S. A. & A. F. Ward no. 62 Walnut St
Description: Fashion advertisement containing two panelled scenes of 16 elegantly attired men, women, and boys in a parlor and outdoor setting. Upper panel shows the parlor scene. A couple in bed coats sits on a chaise lounge. The man accompanied by a boy, attired in a military-style suit, talks to another man, wearing a suit with patterned pants. The woman talks with another lady attired in a bonnet, shawl, and full skirt. A third gentleman stands near two columns to the left. He wears a suit with a lavishly patterned vest and striped pants. On the opposite side of the columns, two women in evening dresses sit at a piano. One wears a feather in her hair and the other wears an elaborate up do with ringlettes on the side. Two men in evening suits join them. Furnishings also includes a framed painting and mosaic carpeting. Lower panel shows the outdoor scene. At the banks of a river, possibly the Schuylkill, 5 men, one woman, and a boy are gathered. The woman, at the center of the scene, wears a riding habit and sits side saddle on her horse. Her male companion, in a riding suit, stands next to her, dismounted from his horse. To the left, a man in a hunting outfit and with a dog stands between two men in suits and top hats. Title: Two of the killers
Description: View showing two outlandishly-attired members of the Philadelphia gang known as the "Killers" carousing on the street. One sits on a fire hydrant and the other leans against a lamp pole (posted with a "Sale" notice") at a street tenanted by a "Grocery" and adorned with broadsides. The men wear patterned pants, jackets with tails, oversized neck ties, and top hats. One also wears a pin adorned "K." They each have their hands in their pockets and smoke cigarettes. The grocery displays a barrel of brooms in addition to signs reading "Coffee Sugar Tea" and "Teas Coffee 5." The broadsides adorning the opposite building advertise "Auction this Evening" and "Circus The Old Man of the Mountain..... Dan Rice Clown." The playbill is illustrated with a scene of an equestrian trick. Description: Fashion advertisement containing two panelled scenes of 17 elegantly attired men, women, and children in a parlor and outdoor, hunting setting. Upper panel shows four men, two women and three boys in a furnished parlor. All of the men are attired in long jackets, vests, cravats and patterned pants. Two hold or wear hats, and two hold canes. To the left, two men stand and converse with two women. The seated lady holds a fan and wears an evening dress, with a low, straight neckline. Her hair is styled in ringlets, and a flower rests behind her ear. The other woman adorns outerwear styled with a high-necked, tight-waisted dress, shawl and plumed bonnet. To the right, two men stand with three boys, who all wear flat caps. The boy on the left is dressed in an Eton suit, while the other two younger boys wear longer tunic suits.
