Upper panel shows six men and two women conversing in a parlor decorated with fine furniture and carpet. All of the men wear long jackets, vests, pants, and cravats. Some hold top hats and canes and wear gloves. An older gentleman is seated in a wing back chair with a paper in his left hand. Attired in high collared, long-sleeve dresses, one of the women holds a hankerchief and the other wears a top hat with a veil. Upper panel shows a parlor furnished with floral carpet, a fireplace, an ornate chandelier, window blinds, a portrait painting, and high-backed chairs. At the center of the scene a young boy with a hoop entertains two seated women attired in dresses and bonnets. Six men dressed in solid or plaid pants, jackets, vests, cravats, and top hats flank the women and child in the center and converse with one another. Lower panel shows six figures, some standing, some leaning against tree stumps, and a man and a woman mounted on horses in the center of the scene. The male figures, including one boy, are attired in solid or plaid jackets, plaid pants, vests, and top hats. - View showing two outlandishly-attired members of the Philadelphia gang known as the "Killers" carousing on the street. One sits on a fire hydrant and the other leans against a lamp pole (posted with a "Sale" notice") at a street tenanted by a "Grocery" and adorned with broadsides. The men wear patterned pants, jackets with tails, oversized neck ties, and top hats. One also wears a pin adorned "K." They each have their hands in their pockets and smoke cigarettes. The grocery displays a barrel of brooms in addition to signs reading "Coffee Sugar Tea" and "Teas Coffee 5." The broadsides adorning the opposite building advertise "Auction this Evening" and "Circus The Old Man of the Mountain..... Dan Rice Clown." The playbill is illustrated with a scene of an equestrian trick. A model harp adorns the door of the music store in which a female patron wearing a bloomer costume enters. Also shows the neighboring J. A. Robinson bookstore (162, i.e., 632 Chestnut). Pedestrians, including another woman in bloomers, walk on the sidewalk, past the store, and look in its window. - Fashion print featuring twenty full-length models in two rows displaying men's and women's indoor and outdoor clothing. Primarily depicts men's fashions but includes three female figures and two children. Top row features figures posed against a domestic interior featuring a large window overlooking a country landscape and patterned carpeting and drapes. Bottom row features figures dressed in outdoor clothing including two Union generals, Maj. Gen. George H. Thomas and Maj. Gen. Two men, one showing his back, attired in suits, top hats in hand, greet each other in front of a sofa. A man and woman in lavish bed coats in front of a vanity dresser look over their two boys attired in jackets and pantaloons as they read a book on an ottoman. A man in a checkered vest sits with a flute in his hand as a man in striped pants, standing near a writing table, and showing his back, addresses him. Also includes framed paintings, mosaic carpeting, and wallpaper trim. Lower panel shows the outdoor scene. A lad wearing a cap, suit, and holding a cane greets a fashionable couple on a hillside that is lined with a picket fence, bushes, and trees. The man wears a suit and top hat and holds a cane, and the lady wears a bonnet and capelet, and holds a handkerchief. In the center, a militiaman in the Uniform of the Richmond Light Blues "copied by permission of Huddy & Duval" stands on a path in front of a mansion house. To the left, a hunting party with a dog convenes near a hitching post scratched with initials. The men wear hats of various styles, long coats, and checkered and dark pants. Each has a handkerchief in an upper or lower coat pocket and one carries a rifle and hunting bag. Most of the depicted men have some facial hair. - Fashion advertisement containing two panelled scenes of 15 elegantly attired men, women, and children in a parlor and a fair setting. Upper panel shows the parlor scene. Eight of the nine men are attired in jackets, vests, cravats, top hats and canes. Some wear plaid and striped pants. One man, seated with sheet music in his lap and a stringed instrument by his side, is attired in an elaborate silk robe. The remaining men, most standing, converse in groups and study framed images hanging on the wall. The left image is a landscape, and the right depicts a portrait of an older man. Lower panel shows the New York Crystal Palace, an exhibition building designed by Georg Carstensen and German architect Charles Gildemeister and constructed for the Exhibition of the Industry of All Nations in New York City in 1853. View includes foot, carriage, and omnibus traffic. Couples, children and dogs stroll the grounds. In the foreground, flanking the view of the exhibition building, are six figures, including a gentleman standing with his back shown, looking at a woman on a horse and a boy holding a watering can. The man is attired in a jacket, top hat and cane, and the boy wears a ruffled cape-like jacket, knickers and a cap. The woman, sitting sidesaddle, wears a dress, jacket, gloves and a plumed hat. On the right side, two men stand with a boy. All of them wear jackets, vests, cravats, patterned pants, boots and hats. One man holds a rifle in his left hand. Many of the depicted men have mustaches and or sideburns. New York's 1853 exhibition was held on the site now home to Bryant Park. - Description
- Trade card depicting well-dressed children on the central promenade of Independence Square when used as Camp Independence, Civil War recruitment camp, in September and October 1862. Tents manned by soldiers line the promenade and the children who carry drums, flags, and a hoop, walk between a group of men and a mother and son.
