- Fashion advertisement containing two panelled scenes of 15 elegantly attired men, women, and children in a parlor and a fair setting. Upper panel shows the parlor scene. Eight of the nine men are attired in jackets, vests, cravats, top hats and canes. Some wear plaid and striped pants. One man, seated with sheet music in his lap and a stringed instrument by his side, is attired in an elaborate silk robe. The remaining men, most standing, converse in groups and study framed images hanging on the wall. The left image is a landscape, and the right depicts a portrait of an older man. Lower panel shows the New York Crystal Palace, an exhibition building designed by Georg Carstensen and German architect Charles Gildemeister and constructed for the Exhibition of the Industry of All Nations in New York City in 1853. View includes foot, carriage, and omnibus traffic. Couples, children and dogs stroll the grounds. In the foreground, flanking the view of the exhibition building, are six figures, including a gentleman standing with his back shown, looking at a woman on a horse and a boy holding a watering can. The man is attired in a jacket, top hat and cane, and the boy wears a ruffled cape-like jacket, knickers and a cap. The woman, sitting sidesaddle, wears a dress, jacket, gloves and a plumed hat. On the right side, two men stand with a boy. All of them wear jackets, vests, cravats, patterned pants, boots and hats. One man holds a rifle in his left hand. Many of the depicted men have mustaches and or sideburns. New York's 1853 exhibition was held on the site now home to Bryant Park. - Advertisement showing the ornately decorated storefront of William H. Horstmann & Sons clothing and military supply store. Patriotic bunting consisting of the names of artists J.H. Otten, carver and J. Gibson, pinxt, and a shield sumounted by an eagle, flags, swords and spears surround a sign that reads, "E Pluribus Unum, Horstmann," above the first level. Drums, military helmets, flags, and swords flank this central display. Laurel wreaths hang above the fasces that form columns on each side of the shop's two doorways and two bay windows. Tassels are visible in the left bay window, while various types of military hemlets are displayed in rows in the right window. Shields and crossed arrows adorn the transom lights above the windows and doors. Wm. H. - Advertisement showing the red, two-bay, six-story building tenanted by Barclay and Isaac Lippincott's clothing store at the southwest corner of Fourth and Market Streets, marked with pre-consolidation addressed buildings. An advertisement painted in white on the east side of the building reads, "Lippincotts one price clothing warehouse cheap for cash." The same phrase is displayed on the front facade, along with the address, "4th & Market Sts., 130" A large flag reading, "Clothing Lippincott & Co.," flies at the top of the building. Two men stand near a display of shirts, pants, vests, and other articles of clothing under the corner awning. Patrons speak with sales clerks who stand behind counters, in front of shelves that extend to the ceiling. The store's wares cover the shop windows. A man walks with a woman holding a parasol near boxes piled outside of the adjacent, four-story property occupied by Lippincott's Clothing Warehouse (132 Market Street, ie. 402 Market Street). Next to the clothing warehouse, framed engravings are displayed in the partially visible shop window of Thomas, importer of engravings (404 Market Street). A large framed print is prominently advertised on the outside of the shop. A person stands in the front doorway of the building immediately south of Lippincott & Co. on Fourth Street. A woman in a red dress rides a white horse along Market Street, and two dogs stand together in the middle of the street in the foreground., The clothing store operated at this address as Lippincott, Taylor & Co., until 1851 when it became Lippincott & Co. under the ownership of Barclay and Isaac Lippincott. The named changed again in 1860 to Lippincott, Hunter & Scott, with an additional store at 424 Market Street. She is attired in a headpiece consisting of feathers, ribbons, and pearls, and an off-the-shoulder, ankle-length ball gown with puff sleeves and a pleated skirt, as well as patterned stockings, slipper shoes, and jewelry, including earrings, necklace, and a bracelet. In the right, the man holds his arms to his sides, and his hands open, as he stands on his toes. In the right, "Mr Mortimer," stands with his right hand over his heart and with his other holding a sheet of music. He wears mutton chops and is attired in a brown coat with tails, a white bow tie, black pants, black stockings, black slipper shoes, and white gloves. His eyes look up and his mouth is open. He sings a love song while the woman seated in the left plays a guitar decorated with blue ribbons. Her head is turned toward the man and she sits on a bench with a blue cushion. She wears a large white bonnet adorned with red and blue bows and with ribbons tied into a bow under her chin. She is also attired in a maroon dress with long puff sleeves, black trim, and a laced bodice, black ankle-tied slipper shoes, as well as rings on her fingers. The green and gold menu cover depicts a Chinese woman, attired in a dress and high-heeled shoes, raising her left hand to her chin as she faces the viewer. She stands on a balcony or bridge overlooking a landscape of trees and mountains under a moonlit sky. The menu is in English and organized by number in sections for “Wines and Liquors” (#1-167); “Chinese Menu” (#1-179); and “American Menu” (#181-383). The Chinese menu includes categories for chop suey, chow mein, Chinese omelettes, and a prix fixe “Table d’Hote” with three different options and prices from $1.25 to $2.50. The American menu includes categories for sea food, steaks, salads, and sandwiches. The restaurant advertises music, broadcasting, and dancing from 12 to 2:00 P.M., 6 to 8 P.M., and 10 to 1 A.M. with a note that “our patrons are requested to dance only with their escorts. This rule is for the protection of both you and us.” A one sheet insertion, decorated with a red border of bamboo, promotes three Table D’Hote dinners for Tuesday, August 17th for 85 cents, $1.10, and $1.35. The Cathay Tea Garden, also called the Cathay Restaurant, was a Chinese restaurant that had a large dance floor where musicians and bands played. They also broadcasted a live radio show. - Racist trade card promoting thread manufacturer J. & P. Coats and depicting a character from The Mikado or, The town of Titipu, the opera by W. S. Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan. Shows the white man actor in character as Nanki-Poo. He stands holding an open fan with his hands up. He wears a blue decoration in his hair and is attired in a blue-striped coat, red shirt, blue and white obi, red tunic, and sandals. A branch of pink flowers is overhead. An oversized spool of thread labeled, "J & P. Coats 200 yds 50 best six cord," is in the left. Brothers James Coats, Jr. (1803-1845) and Peter Coats (1808-1890) established the firm J.&P. Coats, a thread manufactory. Their brother Thomas Coats (1809-1883) joined the firm soon after. By 1840, three quarters of the British company’s business was with the United States. In 1896, the firm merged with thread manufacturer Clark & Co. and formed J. & P. Coats, Ltd.
