- Glass negative showing a view of the National Bank at 5504 Germantown Avenue, a two-story stone building with an elaborate cornice and decorative iron bars over the windows designed by James Charles Sidney (1819-1881). Trolley tracks run down the center of the brick road. A telephone pole stands in front of the bank and a lamp post stands on the corner to the left. Other buildings line the road to the right. The National Bank of Germantown was chartered by the state of Pennsylvania in 1813 and began operations in 1814 in the parlor of the house of Dr. Charles Bensell. The bank built a new building on this site in 1868. Stewart's flour, feed, hay and straw business (4540). A small alley leading to the Frankford Meeting House separates L.J. Faber's cigar store from the other businesses. The market sheds, erected about 1745 to accommodate the growing number of South Philadelphia residents, were expanded to included a fire engine house with cupola around 1804. The market was razed in 1956 and the market with headhouse was rebuilt between 1959 and 1963. A covered wagon stands between the market and the opposite block of storefronts. - Glass negative showing a large, multi-story building owned by Elliston P. Morris at 715-719 Arch Street. The top of the building is decorated with a pediment, half-circle window and finnials. A fire escape runs down the left facade above the neighboring building, which is under construction. The building has a storefront on the first level, awnings over the second story window, and the roof is decorated with a niche surmounted by a pediment and finials. A sign on the third floor reads, "Upper floors to let, 65x130, elevators & power." Designer & Engravers (705-707 Filbert Street). Includes the storefronts, adorned with signs, for Rider Erickson Engine Company; H.W.B. Conrad Publishers (705-707 Filbert Street); Quindlen Company Ladies Undergarments (707-709 Filbert Street); and Lit Brothers Jobbers in Cotton & Woolen Dress Goods (714-738 Filbert Street). For Sale and For Rent signs hang from the Quindlen Company building in the left. Telephone poles and wires line the brick road. A fire escape winds down the side of the four-story building (705-707 Filbert Street) in the center of the image. - Street scene showing south side of Chestnut Street between 4th and 5th Streets depicting two bank buildings designed by Philadelphia architect William Strickland: the Philadelphia Bank building (built 1836) and the custom house (formerly the Second Bank of the U.S., built 1818-24). Philadelphia Bank building (400-408 Chestnut, after renumbering) houses and includes signage for the Western Bank and Girard Life & Trust Company, as well as H.S. & C. Ogden, tailors; Kelly & Bright, stationers; Edward Borheck, optician; Martin Leans, engraver; Wilcox & Delleker, custom house brokers; and Wm. H. Patton, dealer in decorative wall papers. - Description
- Advertisement showing the red, two-bay, six-story building tenanted by Barclay and Isaac Lippincott's clothing store at the southwest corner of Fourth and Market Streets, marked with pre-consolidation addressed buildings. An advertisement painted in white on the east side of the building reads, "Lippincotts one price clothing warehouse cheap for cash." The same phrase is displayed on the front facade, along with the address, "4th & Market Sts., 130" A large flag reading, "Clothing Lippincott & Co.," flies at the top of the building. Two men stand near a display of shirts, pants, vests, and other articles of clothing under the corner awning. Patrons speak with sales clerks who stand behind counters, in front of shelves that extend to the ceiling. The store's wares cover the shop windows. A man walks with a woman holding a parasol near boxes piled outside of the adjacent, four-story property occupied by Lippincott's Clothing Warehouse (132 Market Street, ie. 402 Market Street). Next to the clothing warehouse, framed engravings are displayed in the partially visible shop window of Thomas, importer of engravings (404 Market Street). A large framed print is prominently advertised on the outside of the shop. A person stands in the front doorway of the building immediately south of Lippincott & Co. on Fourth Street. A woman in a red dress rides a white horse along Market Street, and two dogs stand together in the middle of the street in the foreground., The clothing store operated at this address as Lippincott, Taylor & Co., until 1851 when it became Lippincott & Co. under the ownership of Barclay and Isaac Lippincott. The named changed again in 1860 to Lippincott, Hunter & Scott, with an additional store at 424 Market Street.
