He served as the chief photographer for the U.S. Army Medical Museum in 1865 and replaced Timothy O'Sullivan on George M. Wheeler's survey of the territories west of the 100th meridian in 1872. He returned to Philadelphia, went into business with his future son-in-law William Rau in 1875, and was active in the photography community until his death in 1910.

Description: Advertisement showing the red, two-bay, six-story building tenanted by Barclay and Isaac Lippincott's clothing store at the southwest corner of Fourth and Market Streets, marked with pre-consolidation addressed buildings. Extended to Eighth Street in 1816, the Market Street sheds were condemned as an impediment to trade and travel and were razed soon after this photograph was taken. Neighboring businesses, such as prominent Philadelphia drug manufacturer J.M. Maris & Co., visible in this view, previously promoted the sheds because the adjacent storefronts reaped the financial benefits of customers attracted by the market., HSP holds copy with text pasted on verso titled "Farewell Address of the Market Houses."
