Title: Phila[delphia] Dispensary from Independence Square

Founded in 1786 by Benjamin Rush, the dispensary provided medical attention to the indigent sick. Morris. Founded in 1786, the Dispensary provided in-home care to the indigent sick and specialized in inoculation against smallpox. Doctors donated their time to the institution, providing medicine to patients free of charge, in return for medical experience. After renting properties near Chestnut and Strawberry streets, the Dispensary constructed its own out-patient clinic at 127 South Fifth Street in 1801. The plan of the Dispensary shows a “Prescribing Room,” an apothecary shop, and a room for patients on the ground floor, and a Manager’s Room, Library, and three bedrooms on the second floor. He returned to Philadelphia, went into business with his future son-in-law William Rau in 1875, and was active in the photography community until his death in 1910.

Other similar buildings continue to line the street in the distance. Bruner and George were a livery and boarding stables in Germantown, Philadelphia owned by Henry B. Bruner and Riter W. George. The business existed from circa 1858 to circa 1918. This property at 5434 Germantown Avenue was owned by William Ashmead, a wagon manufacturer, after the American Revolution. The luxury hotel, tenanted by several businesses, was built in 1860 after the designs of John McArthur, Jr. and razed in 1924. The Burd Mansion, built for Joseph Sims in 1807 and later owned by his nephew-in-law, prominent Philadelphia lawyer, Edward Shippen Burd, was razed in 1862 to be replaced by storefronts.
