Description: Advertisement showing the 4-story ornamented sandstone storefronts completed in 1853 after the designs of Gustav Runge at 145, 147, 149 (i.e., 300 block) Market Street. Businesses include Maddock Raymond & Co., watches & jewelry, Spring Oaks & Co., dry goods (145); M. L. Hallowell & Co., importers & jobbers in silk goods, Guillou Walton & Co., hosiery & linen goods (147, later 333); and De Courcey Lafourcade & Co., importers of mens wear and cloth warehouse. Also shows street and pedestrian traffic. An older gentleman walks near two women peering into the windows of Lafourcade as a man stands at the entrance of Hallowell. Description: Glass negative showing exterior view from Independence Square of the Philadelphia Dispensary's third building, built in 1801, at 127 South Fifth Street, with partial views of adjacent buildings including the Mercantile Library building (125 South Fifth Street), occupied by the American Bank Note Company at the time of this photograph, and the offices of F. Cooper Shapely (129 South Fifth Street). Boys sit and stand in front of the dispensary building while a horse-drawn Knickerbocker Ice Company cart is parked in front of the Bank Note Company. Founded in 1786 by Benjamin Rush, the dispensary provided medical attention to the indigent sick. Morris. Founded in 1786, the Dispensary provided in-home care to the indigent sick and specialized in inoculation against smallpox. Doctors donated their time to the institution, providing medicine to patients free of charge, in return for medical experience. After renting properties near Chestnut and Strawberry streets, the Dispensary constructed its own out-patient clinic at 127 South Fifth Street in 1801. The plan of the Dispensary shows a “Prescribing Room,” an apothecary shop, and a room for patients on the ground floor, and a Manager’s Room, Library, and three bedrooms on the second floor. He served as the chief photographer for the U.S. Army Medical Museum in 1865 and replaced Timothy O'Sullivan on George M. Wheeler's survey of the territories west of the 100th meridian in 1872. He returned to Philadelphia, went into business with his future son-in-law William Rau in 1875, and was active in the photography community until his death in 1910.

Other similar buildings continue to line the street in the distance. Bruner and George were a livery and boarding stables in Germantown, Philadelphia owned by Henry B. Bruner and Riter W. George.
