Description: Cartoon reflecting the fear among Northern white workers of job competition with free African Americans. Depicts African American men bricklayers, portrayed in racist caricature and speaking in vernacular, on a construction site giving orders to white laborers in a reversal of roles. The laborers work on a large multi-storied brick building fronted by scaffolding and a ladder. The African American supervisors hold trowels and stand at the top of the scaffolding. The Broad Street Station fire, started Monday, June 11, 1923 by a short circuited cable, was at the time considered one of the worst fires in the city's history with an estimated $1,500,000 worth of damage. Description: Glass negative showing the Morris family home Avocado, a multi-story house with a wide porch, tower with a balcony, and tracery decoration, to the left of Phoebe Wright's house under construction and Margaret Antoinette Oglesby's multi-story house. The buildings stand in front of manicured lawns with trees growing behind them. Elliston Perot Morris bought property in Sea Girt, N.J. in 1875, where he built the summer home Avocado after designs by Quaker architect Hibberd Yarnall. Morris left Avocado, named after a Perot family estate in Bermuda, to his daughter Elizabeth Canby Morris in his will. It was sold in 1947 after her death. By 1958 the house had been demolished. Oglesby’s husband Joseph built their house in 1887, but died before it was completed. She and her son continued to live in the house until his death in 1963. The house later burned down. Phoebe Wright was a prominent Quaker philanthropist. Also shows the old City Hall built 1790-1791 after the designs of David Evans, Jr. adorned with lettering reading "Mayors Office" (500 Chestnut); views of Congress Hall built 1787-1789 (540-558 Chestnut), including the building adorned with broadsides; partial views of the construction site for and the completed Public Ledger Building (built 1866-1867, 600-606 Chestnut), the rear gate entrance to Independence Square and the square; pedestrian traffic; horse-drawn wagons; and a guard.
