Title: The cook
Description: As the title suggests, the engraving is a portrait of a Virginia cook, whom Crayon described as "not merely a black woman, . . . but one bearing a patent stamp by the broad seal of Nature; the type of a class whose skill is not of books or training, but a gift both rich and rare -- who flourishes her spit as Amphitrite does her trident (or her husband's, which is all the same), whose ladle is as a royal sceptre in her hands, who has grown sleek and fat on the steam of her own genius, whose children have the first dip in all gravies, the exclusive right to all livers and gizzards, not to mention breasts of fried chickens -- who brazens her mistress, boxes her scullions, and scalds the dogs . . . ." Title: Pratt's astral oil
Description: Series of illustrated trade cards depicting four children having a tea party and cooking by the glow of lamps labeled "Pratt's astral oil". Charles Pratt & Co., founded in New York in 1867, specialized in illuminating oil and was incorporated into John D. Rockerfeller's Standard Oil in 1874., Advertising text printed on versos is surrounded by a floral border and promotes Pratt's astral oil for any activity in the household, including "reading, writing, sewing, or any occupation requiring a soft, steady and uniform light". Chas. Pratt & Co. listed at No. 128 Pearl Street, New York., Distributor's imprint printed on versos: D.C. Title: The First lesson An exceptional offer to the users of Knox gelatine
Description: Racist trade card promoting Knox Gelatine and depicting an African American woman domestic making a gelatin molded dessert with a white girl. Shows an African American woman domestic attired in a head kerchief, spectacles, a patterned shawl, and a white, long-sleeved shirt, sitting in a kitchen behind a table. She teaches the white girl, attired in a hair bow and a striped dress with a ruffled collar, how to decorate a molded gelatin dessert and places a berry on top it. The girl has a bowl of berries in front of her and holds a spoon with a berry on it. On the table there is a mold, a glass, a lid, a knife, a pitcher, and a box labeled, “Knox’s Gelatine.” In the background is a brick hearth with pots and an oven in the right. Charles B. Knox (1855-1908) of Johnstown, New York discovered a method of granulating gelatine in 1889, which made it practical and easy to use. Charles died in 1908, and his wife Rose Knox ran the company for the next forty years. Title: View of the Philadelphia volunteer refreshment saloons
Description: Civil War souvenir print containing six views of the Union Volunteer Refreshment Saloon at the southwest corner of Washington and Swanson Avenues and the Cooper Shop Volunteer Refreshment Saloon at 1009 Ostego Street. Contains a large central view of the exterior of the Union Saloon with troops arriving, entering the dining saloon, and departing on a Philadelphia, Wilmington & Baltimore Railroad car as crowds of people flock around them. Other views depict soldiers using the wash basins adjoining the Cooper Shop Saloon; pro-Union flags and Saloon banners; the Union Saloon's outside washing and cooking departments including an African American man carrying a pail of food; and interiors of both saloons where male and female volunteers attend to long tables of food and a large simmering vat on a hearth. Contains an eagle clutching large American flags and a pro-Union banner above the scenes. Title: John Weik's (Philadelphia) kochbuecher (cookbooks)
Description: Whimsical publisher's advertisement containing four vignettes in a fanciful border of food imagery surrounding a list of cookbook titles in German and English authored by Marianne Struf and the steward of the Union League, William Vollmer. Vignettes depict three quirky scenes representing agricultural work, hunting, fishing, and fine dining. Also contains a scene depicting four women peeling apples, mincing meat, and baking in a kitchen. Vignettes include an African American man waiter and an African American woman cook. Fanciful border contains stone pedestals adorned with seals comprised of cooking implements, as well as a basket of bread, bottles of wine, a crab holding oranges, a tureen of soup, dead game, ears of corn, plates, a pitcher, a coffee grinder, and mischievous monkeys., Title from item., Date from copyright statement: Entered according to act of Congress in the year 1856 by J.
