Title: Midsummer dinner
Description: Racist, genre scene showing an African American boy eating watermelon for his dinner. He smiles, sits cross-legged on a wooden crate and has his right hand plunged into the flesh of one half of a watermelon. He looks slightly toward his right and wears a pork pie hat; long-sleeve, collarless shirt; and ragged pants. Seeds run along the side of his slightly outstretched right foot. The untouched second half of the watermelon rests next to him to his right. The crate contains writing that reads: #888/Stmp/Handle Carefully/Keeb Dry. Title: Bought of Browning & Brothers, wholesale druggists, and dealers in white and red lead, litharge, linseed oil, oil of vitriol, window glass, putty, dye stuffs, &c.&c. No. 33 Market Street
Description: Illustrated billheads containing an exterior view of the "Browning & Brothers Drug and Chemical Warehouse" and storefront on the 100 block of Market Street. Crates and barrels line the sidewalk, near awning posts, in front of the store. One is marked "Oil Vitriol." Also shows partial views of adjacent buidlings. Established by Maurice Browning and his brothers circa 1839, the firm was one of the earliest involved in the United States dye trade and operated a factory known as the Aroma Mills in Camden, N.J., P.2011.46.17 completed in manuscript to Mess. Camitt & Albertson on July 18, 1849 for five items including "2 [fg.?] Laudamun" and "1# Cinnamon Bark" for $9.60. Signed "Recd Payment" Browning & Bros., P.2011.46.18 completed in manuscript to Mess. Camitt & Albertson on March 7, 1850 for six items including "5 #os Liquorice [sic] Root" and "4 doz. Title: [Brown, Frederick & Kunkel, clothing warerooms, 41 North Third Street, Philadelphia]
Description: Unlettered proof of advertisement showing a North Third Street block of businesses (37-43) above Market Street. Includes (left to right) Sieger, Lamb & Co., dry goods (43); Brown, Frederick & Kunkel, men's and boys' wear and Irwin, Shultz & Peiper, merchants (41); S. Brock Jr., fancy dry goods and Iungerich & Smith, grocers (39); and Lloyd & Walmsley, trimmings (37). Storefronts are four to five stories and are built of stone. Gentlemen patrons enter and exit, including one descending an interior flight of stairs, most of the establishments. A crate rests outside and boxes are piled near the second-floor windows of Brown, Frederick, & Kunkel. Barrels crowd the first floor of Iungerich & Smith into which a laborer rolls a barrel as two line the sidewalk behind him. Outside of Lloyd & Walmsley, a gentleman inspects a large box and men sit on or address crates in front of Sieger, Lamb & Co. Drays, a wagon, and handcart, attended by their drivers, and loaded with goods, many with faint writing, are parked in front of, or depart, from each building. One drayman attempts to settle his horse. Also shows the storefront (without signage) at 45 North Third Street and partial views, with signage, of neighboring businesses, including J.W. Title: First meeting of Uncle Tom and Eva
Description: Print of a scene from Stowe's popular, anti-slavery novel, "Uncle Tom's Cabin," originally published in 1851. Depicts "Uncle Tom," an enslaved African American man, and Evangeline St. Claire, the white daughter of a Louisiana enslaver, meeting on the steamship that is taking him to auction. On the deck, Tom, barefoot and attired in a red shirt, blue pants, and with shackles on his wrists, sits on a crate with a Bible in his lap. He talks to an attentive Eva, with her brown hair in ringlets and attired in a pink dress and black shoes, who is seated on a bundle of goods.
