Title: Grandpapa's pet
Description: Periodical illustration of a genre scene showing an elderly man watching over his toddling grandchild inside a cottage. The man sits on a bench next to a tankard and blankets. The grandchild wearing a dress and bonnet uses a chair as a balance. Scene also includes a sleeping dog, tools hanging on the wall and resting on the floor, and a plant displayed on a window sill. Lithotint was a lithographic process using different strengths of ink applied to the printing stone to create the appearance of a watercolor. Title: Camp-meeting
Description: Religious view showing a backwoods revivalist meeting, probably near Philadelphia. On a rickety covered wood stage used as an altar, a minister enthusiastically preaches, his hands in the air, to a crowd of followers. Four men, two distracted by a nearby horn blower, sit on a bench, on the stage, behind the preacher. The followers, predominately women, kneel, dance, stand, and raise their hands with the spirit in an opening between benches. Others, including an older woman and a mother with child, remain seated on the benches as one man holds a fainting woman and another with a euphoric look leans on a tree. Onlookers, many elegantly-dressed, surround the camp meeting attendees. A few look with repugnance and point while others converse in seeming obliviousness. Also shows, in the foreground, three dogs, two wearing collars. One sniffs another's face in greeting. In the distant background, among clearings in trees, the tents and wagons of the attendees are visible. Title: Finn & Burton's paper hangings warehouse No 142, Arch St. Phila
Description: Advertisement showing the first floor of the elegant storefront, on the 600 block of Arch Street, surrounded by a tromp l'oeil border. Through the open entryway, a clerk is visible showing wallpaper samples, propped upon racks, to two women and a gentleman patron, seated on chairs. Large display windows adorned with massive scenic views flank the doorway. A boy and gentleman, stand near a boot scrape and admire one window display, and a mother, holding a parasol, and attended by her daughter, stand on cellar doors, and admire the paper in the other. An elegantly-attired couple strolls past a tall, closed door to the establishment and a muzzled dog walks near by. A hitching post labeled "Wall Paper" stands in front of the store near the street. Title: The White Turtle & the Red Crab of Philadelphia
Description: Showing the Northern Liberties Hose Company (White Turtle) and the Lafayette Hose Company (Red Crab) racing to a bonfire near Eastern State Penitentiary on July 25, 1852 during a weekend of fires throughout the city. Men from each company run side-by-side and pull the ropes hooked to their companies' hose carriages. One man from each company stands at the front of their crew and plays a bugle or yells at the team to push forward. Dogs and pigs run beside the companies, flee the scene, and get caught under the wheel of the hose carriage. Includes a view of the buildings along the street, showing people running in the distance and a sign reading "coal." The "winning" Northern Liberties Hose Company (White Turtle) had a fire house at New Market Street above Coates Street, just a few blocks from the "losing" Lafayette Hose Company (Red Crab) at Fourth Street above Brown Street. Title: Goodyears Rubber-Packing & Belting Company Warehouse 104 Chestnut St. Philada. Factory Newtown, Connecticut. Belting, packing, hose, clothing, druggist-articles, etc
Description: Advertisement showing the five-story offices and storefront known as the Girard Building (102-104, i.e., 306-308 Chestnut) tenanted by Goodyears, i.e., the Philadelphia warehouse of the New York Belting and Packing Company (104), "Peterson's Book Establishment," i.e., the store of publisher T.B. Peterson & Brothers, and C. J. Peterson, publisher of Peterson' Ladies national magazine (102). Lettering reading "Goodyears Rubber Packing & Belting Company" adorns the roof of the building. Through the open entryways and large display windows, clerks, patrons, and merchandise displays are visible in both stores. At Peterson's, clerks assist patrons with items from bookshelves surrounding the room in addition to a centrally located U-shaped display counter labeled "Peterson's Magazine." Stacks of books are displayed near the windows that contain promotions "Subscriptions for all Magazines" and "Chas. Dickens Complete Works." At Goodyears, a white man clerk stands at a counter in front of rows of shelves as he attends to a customer. Other patrons, including a white man and woman couple and a white man, converse and depart with rubber belting. A large model boot, shoes, and rubber toys adorn the display windows that are adorned with the company trademark and read "Goodyears Patent." A white man with a cane and an excited white boy, near his mother, peer at the displays from the busy sidewalk., Other activity, on opposite ends of the sidewalk, includes a white man paying a white newsboy for a paper, gentlemen in conversation, and a white man, a book under his arm, strolling by. Between the storefronts, a white man descends stairs within a central entryway. In the street, a coach with turned-down roof, occupied by a white lady, and driven by an African American coachman travels past a mounted First Troop Philadelphia City Calvary member in full regalia in the direction of a drayman. The white man laborer transports rubber belting on his horse-drawn dray. Two dogs greet each other in the street near his vehicle. Also shows shadowy figures, a man and two women, in upper floor windows of the buildings. Charles Goodyear patented the process to vulcanize rubber in 1844 and oversaw the factory where vulcanized rubber was practically manufactured at Newtown, Connecticut. Peterson established his magazine Peterson's Ladies national magazine in 1840 at 102, i.e., 306 Chestnut Street. Both establishments operated at the pre-consolidated address in 1856.
