Description: View showing the former coffee house and merchants' exchange. Shows building tenanted by Ulrich & Brother's Tobacco & Segar Store (100 Market). Crates stand piled near the entranceways and striped poles and window shutters adorn the building. Also shows the adjacent men's and boys' clothing stores operated by Philip Hunt (100 Market) and William Umberger (102 Market); merchandise on display; a handcart resting idle on Front Street; and a conestoga wagon parked near a pile of barrels on the sidewalk. Also shows a doll standing on one of the piles of crates in front of the tobacco store. Description: Racist trade card promoting Dannemiller Coffee Company and depicting a genre scene with an African American boy jockey, white children, and a horse. In the left, the jockey, attired in riding boots; white breeches; a white shirt and red vest; and a red and white jockey cap, stands beside a brown horse onto which he helps a white boy mount. He holds the bridle in his left hand and leans down to help the boy place his foot into the stirrup with his right hand. In the center, the white boy, attired in a Fauntleroy outfit with black boots and hat, grips the saddle to hoist himself up onto the horse. In the right, a smiling white girl with long, brown hair looks at the viewer. She descends a set of stairs holding the railing. She is attired in black shoes, a yellow dress with blue trim, stockings, and a bow in her hair. She carries a doll costumed in a red and white dress with matching red shoes and hat. Description: Racist trade card promoting Kendall’s French Laundry Soap and depicting caricatures of two African American boys carrying an African American girl in a “sedan chair” that is made from a box of Kendall’s soap. In the left, the barefooted boy attired in a straw hat, a red shirt, and white pants with black suspenders holds the tree branch carrying the sedan over his right shoulder with his right hand. His left hand is in his pants pocket. In the right, the barefooted boy attired in a straw hat, a blue shirt, and white pants holds the other end of the branch over his left shoulder with his left hand and carries a branch with red flowers in his right hand.
