Designed by three different Philadelphia architects, the houses exhibit strikingly disparate architectural styles reflecting a mid-century trend for increasing diversity in domestic architecture which was made possible by a greater availability of varieties of stone. The Italianate home of hotelier George Edwards, visible in the distance, was designed by Napoleon LeBrun. Samuel Sloan’s plans for Joseph Harrison, Jr.’s Baroque Revival mansion with its symmetrical wings included a conservatory and a gallery for Harrison’s extensive art collection. The adjoining Gothic Revival structure in the foreground was designed by John Notman as the rectory for St. Mark’s Church., McClees, a prominent Philadelphia photographer and daguerreotypist, produced some of the earliest paper photographic views of Philadelphia between 1853 and 1859.

Then too the drying and baking of the brick was of vast importance and was done with the utmost attention towards the securing of the best results. These bricks were baked with wood fires, as was the lime on which they were laid. Isaac Franks in 1792 after Deshler’s death. President George Washington rented the home for the duration of the yellow fever epidemic of 1793 and the summer of 1794. Elliston and John Perot purchased the house in 1804, selling it to Elliston’s son-in-law Samuel B. Morris after his death in 1834. The house stayed in the possession of the Morris family for over a century, when Elliston P. Morris donated the house to the National Parks Service in 1948. Description: Postcard depicting exterior view of the house, also known as the Letitia Street House, built for merchant Thomas Chalkley in 1713 to 1715. Shows the two-and-a-half-story house with a gabled roof and dormer; green shuttered windows on the façade; and a sign above the front door that reads, “William Penn.” The front doors and windows are open.
