- Glass negative showing Old Sherrit House, i.e. Loudoun, at 4650 Germantown Avenue, a two-story house with shuttered windows and two chimneys. The front facade has a covered entryway constructed from columns and a pediment. The house is surrounded by trees, whose branches cast shadows on the lawn. Thomas Armat built Loudoun in 1801 and expanded it in 1810. The Greek portico on the front was added in 1830. Later, members of the Logan family owned and lived in the house. The property was donated to the city of Philadelphia in 1939 as a part of the Colonial Germantown Historic District. Originally built by Dirk Jansen circa 1755, Upsala was the staging ground for the Continental army at the Battle of Germantown in 1777. The expanded house, built by Jansen’s descendant John Johnson III in 1798, remained with the Johnson family until 1941.
