Description: View shows Mount Pleasant mansion in Fairmount Park, Philadelphia flanked by outbuildings. The view is somewhat obscured by trees. The Middle-Georgian country house was built 1761-1765 for Captain John Macpherson after the designs of Thomas Nevil on Mount Pleasant Drive in Fairmount Park, Philadelphia, Pa. Macpherson, a privateer during the Seven Years’ War, purchased the estate with profits from these operations. Free white and Black laborers, indentured servants, and at least four enslaved people of African descent, whose names are unknown, worked on the plantation. In 1779, General Benedict Arnold purchased Mount Pleasant for his wife Peggy Shippen, but they never occupied the house. In 1792, General Jonathan Williams purchased the mansion. The City of Philadelphia purchased the property from the Williams family in 1869. Title: Tobias Gilmore House, Raynham, 1781-1918. "Toby" Gilmore, born in Africa, was a patriot of the American Revolution
Description: Souvenir card depicting the second Raynham, Ma. residence of Black Revolutionary War soldier Shibodee Turry Wurry also known as Tobias Gilmore. Shows the two-story wooden residence with portico, hipped roof, and chimney and grassy, front grounds. Trees and shrubbery line and surround the house. Wurry born in West Africa, was kidnapped and enslaved in 1757. Captain John Gilmore of Rayham, Ma. became his enslaver and renamed Wurry, Tobias Gilmore. Gilmore enlisted in military service in 1776, during the American Revolution, to gain his freedom. In December 1781, Gilmore was discharged from service, including serving at the Battle of Fort Ticonderoga. He returned to Rayham a free man. In 1784, he purchased land in Rayham and built his first home. He built his second home circa 1800. Description: Albums of progress photographs of the early construction of City Hall built 1871-1901 on Penn Square after the designs of John McArthur, Jr. Photographs show different stages of the construction of the foundation and lower floor of the building between 1873 and 1875. Title: Belmont and waterworks. Mount Pleasant, Fairmount Park, Philada
Description: Lithograph showing mules walking on towpaths pulling canal boats in the Schuylkill River in the foreground. Also shows distant views of West Fairmount Park properties, including Belmont Mansion, the estate house and country seat of Judge Richard Peters; the smokestack of the Belmont Waterworks engine house, designed by Frederick Graff in the late 1860s; and Mount Pleasant Mansion (i.e. Arnold Mansion) built after designs by Thomas Nevil 1761-1765 for Captain John Macpherson. Includes a locomotive traveling north on the west bank of the river in the right background. Macpherson, a privateer during the Seven Years’ War, purchased the estate with profits from these operations. Free white and Black laborers, indentured servants, and at least four enslaved people of African descent, whose names are unknown, worked on the plantation. In 1779, General Benedict Arnold purchased Mount Pleasant for his wife Peggy Shippen, but they never occupied the house. In 1792, General Jonathan Williams purchased the mansion. The City of Philadelphia purchased the property from the Williams family in 1869. Stirling was also active in the Photo-Secession Movement and a member of several other clubs in addition to the "jaunters," including the Photographic Society of Philadelphia, the Pen and Pencil Club, and Manufacturer's Club. He was married to Anne J. Biddle, who also practiced photography. The couple had one son, Charles Biddle, who died in infancy.

His firm, which originally specialized in portraiture, later focused on "Artistic Business and Landscape Photographs" and was reorganized as R. Newell & Son circa 1872. In 1876, the studio (Robert and Henry Newell) issued a series of six viewbooks under the title "Old Landmarks & Relics of Philadelphia."
