Description: Illustrated metamorphic trade card for the Indianapolis Brewing Co. When folded, a gentleman attired in a suit, top hat, and cane expresses surprise upon viewing what appears to be a nude woman embracing a man. When opened, the trade card reveals that she is attired in a flesh-colored dress and stands on a veranda enjoying a beer with her male companion. Description: Plate probably from a children's moral instruction picture book showing two white boys walking past a town saloon. One boy, attired in a wide-brimmed yellow hat, blue jacket, and tan britches, holds something in his left hand and uses his right hand to pat the back of the other boy beside him. The other boy, attired in a blue cap, red jacket, and yellow britches holds a thin rod and looks toward his companion. Behind the boys stands the saloon with a porch and open entryway and window. Description: Six prints based upon Sebastian Le Clerc II's 1751 series, "L'Histoire de l'enfant prodigue," depicting the Prodigal Son parable of sin, penitence, and salvation. Includes two Black characters: a prostitute and a male servant. The six scenes titled: La Enfant prodigue exigeant sa Legitime; Le depart de l'Enfant prodigue; Vie debauche de l'Enfant prodigue; L'Enfant prodigue dans la plus grande Misere; L'Enfant prodigue reclamant la bonte de son Pere; Rejouissances pour le Retour de l'Enfant prodigue depict the white son claiming his patrimony, taking leave of his father, living a debaucherous life with prostitutes, in misery as a swineherder, returning penitent to his father, and celebrating his return with a feast., "Vie debauche de l'enfant prodigue" shows the prodigal son engaged in immoral behavior. Description: Group portrait in an outdoor setting, probably the Junger Maennerchor annual picnic and summer night's festival at Schützen Park, depicting hundreds of members (several with their faces likely based after photographs) of the German-American choral society founded in 1852. Description: Trade card depicting a racist, comic, genre scene to promote the Co-operative Dress Association established by journalist and lecturer Kate Fields in 1881. Description: Volume of compiled prints and drawings by lithographer, etcher, and artist Augustus Kollner primarily depicting landscapes of Fairmount Park and originally published in his "Bits of Nature ...," one of four volumes in his 1878 series of small folio pictures. Also contains views of Philadelphia and Bucks and Montgomery counties. Several of the prints also show park and riverscape; residences and estates; animals, including canal mules, horses, cows, and dogs; park visitors, including an African American family, children, and persons on foot and on horseback; steamboats, rowboats, and other vessels on the Schuylkill River; and rock formations. Free white and Black laborers, indentured servants, and at least four enslaved people of African descent, whose names are unknown, worked on the plantation. In 1779, General Benedict Arnold purchased Mount Pleasant for his wife Peggy Shippen, but they never occupied the house. In 1792, General Jonathan Williams purchased the mansion. Description: Trimmed metamorphic trade card promoting Chase & Sanborn's coffee. Depicts a quirky, racist scene with a trompe l’oeil aesthetic and including the oversized head of a Black man with exaggerated features in a North African setting. Shows an African man attired in a yellow hooded robe on a white horse and holding a long spoon to an enormous face of an African man. His head covered in a green and red turban has torn through a wall. He purses his lips out to the spoon. In the center of the image is a white coffee cup with a blue stripe and the text "Standard java, Chase and Sanborn, Boston" written in red. In the right foreground, holding a basket, is a barefooted African woman attired in a white dress with red stripes and cap sleeves; a yellow vest; and red, head kerchief. In the background is a building with Moresque decorative features in the doorway and window. Illustrated on the verso is a partial view of a black man. Shows his chin and lower lip, his torso, and his legs above his ankles. Caleb Chase (1831-1908) established a coffee and tea company in 1864. Chase partnered with coffee seller James Sanborn (1835-1903) in 1874 to form Chase & Sanborn. Description: Racist, satiric trade card promoting the Great American Tea Company. Depicts in two panels an African American man knocking down two African American children eating a candy stick by opening the cellar doors they were sitting on. In the left panel, shows caricatures portrayed with exaggerated features of two barefooted African American children sitting on top of slanted cellar doors. In the left, the boy, attired in a hat, a long-sleeved shirt, and pants with suspenders, holds a striped candy stick in his mouth. In the right, the girl, attired in a bonnet and a dress, shares the same candy stick and sucks the opposite end in her mouth above the caption, “united we stand.” In the right panel, an African American man has come up from inside the cellar and stands holding both doors open in his hands. He is attired in a white shirt, a striped vest, striped pants, and a cap, and holds a pipe in his mouth.
