Incorporated by Congress in July 1866, the mission of the school was to provide "normal and school education, as well as a practical knowledge of farming in all its branches" to "orphan and dependent children of colored soldiers, and of other colored orphans." By November 1866, the school was under construction and had fifty pupils. That month, the French Opera Comique Troupe held a benefit concert for the school in Philadelphia that was reported to "not have been as well attended as it should have." Title: Albert Newsam Papers. 1833-1864 (inclusive)
Description: The Albert Newsam Papers holds correspondence and documents sent to, written by, and about the artist. Some of the material relates to the Gallaudet Monument Association, which was organized to collect funds from the deaf community nationwide to raise a monument to Thomas H. Gallaudet (1787-1851) on the grounds of the American Asylum for the Education and Instruction of the Deaf and Dumb (now the American School for the Deaf) in Hartford, Connecticut. Newsam designed the monument, and was vice president for fundraising in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, and Maryland. The collection also holds a circa 1835 folio album, titled “Principles of Perspective,” which is thought to be in Newsam's hand and functioned as his workbook on the subject., Letters from Albert Newsam to John A. McAllister are in the Library Company's John A. McAllister Papers (McA MSS 001); in those letters, Newsam writes accounts of his life at the Living Home and the work he is pursuing while there. Through devious means he was taken to Philadelphia where, by good fortune, he was admitted in 1820 to the recently established Pennsylvania Institution for the Deaf and Dumb. Newsam had exhibited great talent as an artist while young man, and became an apprentice with Philadelphia lithographer Col. Cephas G. Childs (1793-1871) in 1827, after which he became the principal artist with the noted printer Peter S. Duval (1804 or 05-1886). A master copyist, portraitist, and chromiste, Newsam is generally credited with helping to elevate the art of lithography in the United States. His career ended suddenly in 1859 when he suffered a stroke that affected his vision and coordination; he spent his final years at Dr. John A. Brown's Living Home for the Sick and Well, near Wilmington, Delaware, a situation arranged for him and funded by a committee of friends that included John A. McAllister.

Description: View looking northeast from above Third Street showing the former school house, known as the Zion Lutheran School, built in 1761 after the designs of Robert Smith, at 325-7 Cherry Street. Building tenanted by Joseph Wrigley's hotel and tavern. Also shows the adjacent G. Goebel's Hotel and Lager Beer Saloon (N.E. cor. 4th and Cherry). Completed in 1761, the building faced some disapproval from the reverend because of its cost. Nonetheless, the Zion Lutheran School, as it became known, provided a meeting space for the German Society of Pennsylvania, a parish hall for the Zion Lutheran Church across the street, and room for classes. Antiquarian Charles Poulson’s note on this 1859 photograph mentions that the center window on the first floor was originally a front door., Richards, Philadelphia painter, etcher, and photographer produced some of the earliest successful paper photographic prints in the city, including photographs commissioned by local historian Charles Poulson to document Philadelphia.

Title: Views of Tuskegee Institute
Description: Collection of views of the campus and the outlying areas of the African American vocational school organized by Booker T. Washington in Tuskegee, Alabama. Established in 1881 as a normal school for Black teachers, the school relocated in 1882 to an abandoned plantation and evolved into a co-educational vocational school active within the local community. The institute trained students in academic and industrial subjects including farming, dairy work, masonry, sewing, nursing, bible studies, and agricultural science. The majority of the campus was constructed by the students., Contains exterior views of several campus buildings including the Men's Industrial Building; the women's or Alabama Hall, and Phelps Hall containing the bible training school, as well as workshops, the brick kiln, the chapel, and Booker T. Washington's house. Also depicts scenes and portraits of daily life at and near the school including W.V. Two of the siblings, Mary and George, joined the Photo-Secession movement at its founding in 1902.

Description: Group portrait depicts the women, including Helen Waller, posed in three rows on the steps outside the entryway to the hospital and training school. Five woman stand in a line in the top and bottom rows and four women stand in a line in the middle row. The women hold their arms to their sides or behind them and have plain expressions. The women in the bottom row wear white, ankle-length dresses with long sleeves and collars, white stockings, and white shoes with heels. They also wear nurses caps with the one of the woman in the middle trimmed with a thin black stripe along the edge, possibly “Miss Harris, super-intendant of the nurses.” The women in the upper rows wear white, long-sleeved shirts, white apron dresses, and nurses caps. The sign naming the hospital and school adorning the building is partially visible in the right. The figure who is Helen Waller, a 1919 graduate of the hospital is not known, but likely one of the women in the first row., Dr. J. H. Mudgett’s Private Hospital and Training School for Nurses was established by New Hampshire-born white (per census records) physician John H. Mudgett and chartered in 1919. Mudgett served as the medical director of surgery. In 1921, the school was one of a number of nursing schools advertised in the “Evening Public Ledger” as offering “Free Tuition, Board, Lodging, and a Nominal Fee” to be trained as a nurse. Mudgett, graduated Dartmouth Medical School in 1896 and resided in Philadelphia as a physician by circa 1905. By 1925, he was listed as only a physician with no listing for the training school. Mudgett, a member of the First African Baptist Church, died in 1945. At the time of his death he was in a multiracial marriage with Adeline Mudgett (1889-1958), a former dressmaker. His race on his death certificate had been altered from white to “colored.” Helen Waller (1897-1925) was one of the first nurse graduates of Mudgett’s Hospital in 1919.
