Shuttered windows line the left and back walls. Two large skylights in the ceiling provide the main source of light in the room. The Female Society of Philadelphia for the Relief and Employment of the Poor, founded in 1795, operated the House of Industry, which offered a nursery and employed women to make handicrafts. The Quaker group provided food, clothing, and fuel to widows and children of men who had perished in the yellow fever epidemic of 1793. The society later established a “House of Industry” with a nursery, where women were employed to make handicrafts. The House of Industry depicted here in 1870 was located at 112 North Seventh Street.
