Description: View showing the laboratory complex of processing plants and storage sheds established in 1848 on Ridge Avenue near Schuylkill Falls (i.e., East Falls). Within the complex, laborers haul goods by horse among the several buildings, smoke stacks, and trees. Description: Illustration on recto of specimen sheet/price list depicting the factory for the printing establishment at 1525 Orthodox Street (corner of Orthodox and Franklin (later Griscom) Streets). Description: Advertisement print showing the factory complex on the 400 block of North Fifth Street. Complex includes a three-story building marked "Wm. Dunlap No. 169 Carriage Maker"; wood-gated courtyard; and a two-story building, probably including a showroom, adorned with signage reading ""Wm. Dunlaps' Coach Factory." Description: Advertisement showing the two-story factory adorned with signage on the 800 block of North Sixth Street near Spring Garden. A boy pulls a carriage out of one of the two entries to the building (Sixth Street) as patrons inspect a different model of coach being pushed out by a factory worker at the other. A family walks between the coaches and other carriages are visible inside. Around the corner (Brown Street), on the sidewalk, two gentlemen converse and a couple peers into a factory window. Near the rear of the factory, a laborer transports a sack on his back near a strolling couple past a hackney displayed on a one-story addition. In the street, a driver tries to reign in his speeding carriage occupied by a couple that is being chased by a barking dog as a boy works on the wheel of a factory carriage nearby. Description: Advertisement showing the busy "Car Factory & Bolt Nut & Washer Works," of John Murphy and J. C. Allison, also proprietors of the Girard Tube Works, who established a partnership in 1851 at 1908 Market Street. A completed rail car and a horse-drawn double decker omnibus depart from the sign-covered factory and "Office of the Girard Tube Works." A worker labors on a rail car in an upper window, a man on horseback stops near the entrance to the "Blacksmith Shop," and clusters of pedestrians walk in front of the works. A small crowd flanks the omnibus that is adorned with illustrations of rail cars as it leaves the factory bay. In the foreground, men and boys, across from two men shaking hands, inspect an ornately painted "City Passenger R.R." car on display in the street in front of the factory. Description: Diploma depicting six vignettes and graphic elements symbolizing agriculture and horticulture separated into distinct scenes by borders designed as trees and foliage. At the top, a winged, female allegorical figure, attired in a robe and laurel wreath, sits with her arms outstretched over a shield surmounted by an eagle. She holds a bugle in her left hand and a laurel wreath in her right, and she reaches in the direction of two horses that flank the shield. Images of a railroad locomotive crossing a stone arch bridge (left) and a waterfront industrial complex (right) flank the winged figure. On the sides, scenes depict cattle and sheep grazing, men harvesting a field with a horse-drawn reaper, and a man feeding horses near a large bale of hay. At the bottom, tools and agricultural products surround the society's blind stamp, and include farm produce, scythes, pitchforks and wheelbarrows. The Pennsylvania State Agricultural Society was founded in 1851 by representatives from 50 counties with the object to "foster and improve agriculture, horticulture, and the domestic and household arts." Description: Diploma containing two vignettes and and a dominant scene symbolizing agriculture separated by borders comprised of sheaves of wheat, a shovel, farm produce, and vinery. In the upper right, vignettes depict a farmer reaping his field with a horse-drawn reaper and an industrial view of a train passing a coal breaker factory across from a coal mine in which horse-drawn coal cars arrive and depart. The dominant scene shows a farm with livestock, including a pig, turkeys, chickens, and ducks milling the grounds near a woman milking a cow while farmhands corral cows out of a yard, transport a wagon of hay from a barn, and plow a field. View also shows horses before a pasture of grazing sheep and other homesteads, the Wyoming Monument (erected in 1833 in memory of victims of the Wyoming Massacre 1778), and treescaped hills in the distance. The Luzerne County Agricultural Society was founded in 1858 by persons interested in farming and gardening with the mission "to foster and improve agriculture, horticulture, and the domestic and household arts." Description: Advertisement showing the busy four-story factory for the bakery at 129 North Front Street, between Chestnut and Walnut Streets. A gentleman, possibly the proprietor Thomas Wattson, stands in one of the open doorways to the bakery as laborers work around him. Near the doorways, workers load kegs onto a horse-drawn "T. Wattson & Sons Biscuit Bakery" wagon and dray. Other men, hoist kegs to upper receiving windows from a group of several lined in front of the factory. In a few of the windows, men at work and stacks of barrels are visible. Laborers hammer shut and move kegs. Description: Advertisement showing a bird’s eye view of the factory complex of several buildings and courtyards originally built 1855 between 18th, Fitzwater, 17th, and Catherine streets. Complex includes the L-shaped building at the corner of Fitzwater and Seventeeth streets that displays the sign “Rosengarten & Sons. Established 1822” near the entrance. The building contained the office, packing rooms, and manufacturing rooms for the firm. Several individuals walk on the sidewalk and horse-drawn carts and wagons travel near the street corner. On the Fitzwater block in front of the complex, which also includes a storage shed, stable, and warehouse for the factory, other wagons and carts are parked. Title: Explosion and burning of the cartridge factory, cor. Tenth and Read [sic], March 2[9]th 1862
Description: Disaster scene showing the aftermath of the explosion of the factory of Professor Samuel Jackson located in South Philadelphia. Shows people fleeing, trapped, and engulfed in flames at the ruins of the burning factory. In the foreground, a man rushes to cover a man's body that has had its head and arm amputated; men throw buckets of water and blankets on women on fire; individuals carry the wounded; comfort the survivors; rush in with buckets; and hose the fire. Also shows a man looking in horror from a train car in the left of the image and debris flying in the air and lying on the ground. Over 15 people, including the son of the proprietor, perished in the explosion of the factory that was contracted to produce one and a half million experimental "solid water proof patent cartridges" during the Civil War. Jackson, a Philadelphia pyrotechnist and inventor, began the manufacture of fireworks in Philadelphia in 1837. He continued in pyrotechnics until 1887, when he began to manufacture danger signals for railroads. Description: Advertisement showing the busy small manufactory complex established by Simons in 1831. Several laborers work diligently in the yard, and at the windows and workshops of the wheel making establishment. In the yard, workers carry slabs of wood from a large pile, fashion wheels near an open fire, and lead a horse-drawn truck of wagon parts past an idle truck marked "Wm. Massey, New Orleans" and wagons marked "T. Craven Old Point Virginia" and "U.S. 1720." Wagon wheels and frames rest along the buildings where laborers toil away at the windows. Also show workers hoisting wagon bodies, blacksmithing at an anvil, working on a wheel and wagon body, and operating a large piece of machinery in the workshops. Title: Plan of the United States dry dock, at Philadelphia, on the new system of the sectional floating dock, basin, & railways, now constructing by contract with Mess. Dakin & Moody Area available for docking in the plan 350 by 90 feet, 31, 500 square feet. Area available for docking in the U.S. dry dock at Norfolk, 210 by 60 feet, 12, 000 square feet. It will be observed that area available for docking in this dry dock is twice and a half greater than in the U.S. stone dry dock at Norfolk, enabling the former to receive a vessel covering twice and half as much space as the utmost limit of the latter. It will also be observed that the efficiency of the Norfolk dock, is limited to docking one ship of the line at a time, of about 200 feet in length, whereas the new Philadelphia dock, will be able to dock three war steamers of 350 feet in length each, and ten ships of the line all at the same time. The Norfolk dock cost $962, 459 and the cost of one on that plan capable of taking only one vessel 350 by 90 feet, estimated on the same basis would be $2, 406, 147 or about three times the contract price of the Philadelphia dock

Description: Advertisement containing a view of the Fell & Brother's factory near Wilmington, Delaware and vignettes of eight varieties of spice plants including, cinnamon, pepper, cloves, mustard, nutmeg, ginger, allspice and cocoa. Other pictorial elements depict a female figure, holding a plant, flanked by American flags and a shield bordering the factory view, as well as scroll and floral embellishments. Description: Advertisement showing the busy "Pier 45" and factory of the firm at North Delaware Avenue. On the pier, laborers drive loaded and empty horse-drawn carts, unload sand from a barge, operate hoists from within sheds, and work on a raised platform between warehouses marked "Sand." Boatmen and workers operate equipment and perform manual labor on barges and boats, most with visible names, surrounding the pier. Names include Walter C. of Burlington, Sherman, Wilson, Willie Paxson of Philadelphia, Minerva, Samuel Miller, Estelle (built by Pusey & Jones, delivered 1884 to Paxson), and Saml. C. Bougher. In the background, the factory buildings, connected by an overpass, are visible neighbored by the B&O and P.R.R. freight depots, a pier covered in barrels and bales of wood, and other surrounding buildings. Also shows a locomotive at the P.R.R. freight depot, smokestacks, and carts departing from the Paxson pier under the overpass. Description: Advertisement showing a view of the marble yard fronted by a triple arch adorned with plaques, the adjoining three-story office building, and rear factory of the establishment at Green Street above 7th Street. From the sidewalk, decorated as black and white tile, a lady, holding a parasol, and a gentleman admire several ornate obelisks and monuments within the fenced, arched yard. Several of the pieces are adorned with patriotic details, urns, and statuary. Plaques on the arches include the name of the business in addition to text reading "Every Description of Monumental Works Executed" and "Plain & Carved Mantels of Every Description." Under the third arch and entrance to the yard, a clerk and patron talk near slabs of marble propped against the wall of the office building. Behind the men, a laborer hauls a large monument by a dolly into the factory yard. More monuments, including animal sculpture and statuary, are displayed in the fenced court, upper balcony, and Gothic-style windows of the adjacent office building. A female patron walks between the marble pieces down a pathway toward a clerk standing at the entrance. An American eagle sculpture adorns the arches and an American flag adorns the office. Description: Advertisement depicting an exterior view of the Rogers' industrial complex, the "model coach factory of America," at the busy corner of Sixth and Master streets. A white man clerk displays a carriage to a man and woman couple as laborers work on the upper stories. Drays, surreys, "Rogers" delivery carts, and a young African American man with a horse traverse the intersection. A white man passenger disembarks from a Sixth Street line horse-drawn omnibus near the factory entrance. A second omnibus rests at the corner, the white man driver unhappily receiving a citation from a white man constable; his young, white boy passenger watching with a look of awe sitting beside his mother.
