- Contains images of the John B. Stetson Hat Company manufactury near 5th and Montgomery Avenues. The company moved to this site in 1874 and constructed 20 buildings over a 55 year period. Operations ceased in this location in 1971. Images depict an aerial drawing of the 29 acre campus and interior photographs of the office corridor, reception room and salesroom. Also includes employees finishing soft hats, forming and sizing hat bodies, cutting fur and flanging soft hats, trimming stiff hats and weaving silk bands and bindings., Divided backs. - Description
- Pictorial envelope designed by Sesqui-centennial committee members Samuel Dilbert, W. Morris Deischer and Howard L. Boas containing a menagerie of imagery bordering two vignettes. Vignettes depict a view of the Reading "Court House, 1782-1841" and a view captioned "1748" showing Native Americans near a teepee watching a traveling Conestoga wagon from across a river. Other images show a locomotive, factories, train shed, and a winged female allegorical figure holding a trumpet and bolt of lightning, probably representing progress. An anvil, gear, and angle rest at the figure's feet. Over 700, 000 envelopes were printed and distributed nationally. The sesqui-centennial celebration included band concerts; civic, firemen, and industrial parades; grand illuminations; fireworks; and an equestrian and bicycle day., Addressed in manuscript to: Ronalds & Johnson Co., 139 N. 7th St., Philadelphia, Pa., Printed in red ink on recto: Return to E. - Trade cards containing views of "Studebaker Platform Spring Truck. No. 281." and "Studebaker Platform Spring Coal Wagon. No. 481 " Views also show horse teams hitched to the vehicles, the drivers, and background scenery of a storefront and coal mill. One of the cards also contains vignette views of Stuebaker Bros. Mfg. main and branch buildings printed on the verso. Buildings depicted include "Carriage Works, South Bend, Ind."; "Factory & Repository, 203-205 Michigan Ave. Chicago"; and "Wagon & Spring Wagon Works, South Bend, Indiana." Views include street and pedestrian traffic. Strudebaker Bros., established in 1852 and incorporated in 1868, opened a Chicago factory in 1884. - Billhead containing an exterior view of the L-shaped glue factory, and courtyard. Smoke billows from the stacks on the roof and a weather vane adorns a tower at the cross-section of the building. One section includes vented windows and a chute into the yard, which contains crates and a lamp post. In the street, a horse-drawn cart travels toward one stopped near a gentleman. Charles Cumming operated a factory as a sole proprietor until circa 1855 when his firm C. Cumming & Co. was established., Name of proprietors (Charles Cumming and James R. Some trade cards and labels are embossed, die cut, or metamorphic designs. Businesses and trades include the tobacco, transportation, and rags and paper industry; manufacturers of carriages and wagons, saddlery and harnesses, musical instruments, textiles, and pins; dealers in lumber, furniture, willow ware, clothing, medicines, seeds, spices, and groceries; stationers, printers, and publishers; and a dentist and violin teacher. Also contains rewards of merit; advertising calendars; mid 19th-century miniature illustrated seals containing admonitions; an 1872 American Wood Paper Company pass; an advertising flier for the New Stevens Spring Tooth Harrow plow; tobacco silks containing portraits of prominent Native American chiefs; a reprint of the 1841 "A Plan of the Borough of Harrisburg" designed by John Probst; a wrapper for J. Geo. Hintz, a Reading, Pa. stationer; and menu for the Delavan House hotel under the proprietorship of Charles Leland in Albany, NY. Illustrations depict various subjects.
