Description: Advertisement showing a view of the glue and animal product manufactories of Charles Baeder on a lot of land on the 1700 block of North Sixth Street. Includes the seven-story glue works with cupola and the smaller multi-story starch, hide whip, and curled hair factory. Two outbuildings with active smoke stacks stand between the factories. Trees and bushes are visible on the property. A horse-drawn cart travels in the foreground. The firm, established in 1828 by Baeder, became the premier manufacturer of its kind in the United States. Description: Diploma containing two vignettes and and a dominant scene symbolizing agriculture separated by borders comprised of sheaves of wheat, a shovel, farm produce, and vinery. In the upper right, vignettes depict a farmer reaping his field with a horse-drawn reaper and an industrial view of a train passing a coal breaker factory across from a coal mine in which horse-drawn coal cars arrive and depart. The dominant scene shows a farm with livestock, including a pig, turkeys, chickens, and ducks milling the grounds near a woman milking a cow while farmhands corral cows out of a yard, transport a wagon of hay from a barn, and plow a field. View also shows horses before a pasture of grazing sheep and other homesteads, the Wyoming Monument (erected in 1833 in memory of victims of the Wyoming Massacre 1778), and treescaped hills in the distance. Title: Scene in a Lynchburg tobacco factory
Description: Illustration is included in Chapter LXI, "A Visit to Lynchburg in Virginia," and corresponds with the following passage, which clearly aims to present the tobacco factories in a positive, and even romantic light: "It [Lynchburg] has thirty-five tobacco factories, employing great numbers of negroes, men, women, and children. These negroes earn good wages, work faithfully, and turn out vast quantities of the black, ugly compound known as "plug," which has enslaved so many thousands, and promoted such a sublime disregard for the proprieties in the matter of expectoration. . . . In the maufacturies the negro is the same cheery, capricious being that one finds him in the cotton or sugar-cane fields; he sings quaintly over his toil, and seems entirely devoid of the sullen ambition which many of our Northern factory laborers exhibit. The men and women working around the tables in the basements of the Lynchburg tobacco establishments croon eccentric hymns in concert all day long; and their little children, laboring before they are hardly large enough to go alon, join in the refrains." Shows heavy maritime traffic, including a steamboat, sailboats, schooners, and a long boat with a crew transporting a bale of cotton. Also shows a church on the property in the far right of the image. Advertising text printed below the image lists the variety of the "Brown Cottons - Woolens - Prints - Pantaloonery &c. - and Bleached Cottons" available at Brown's as selling agents for other suppliers. Suppliers include Bates Mills, Essex Mills, Lion Mills, Whittenton Mills, Climax Mills, and Hale Mills. Products include sheetlings, shirtlings, jeans, flannels, shawls, zephyr coating, and corset jeans.
