The Butchers’ and Farmers’ Market, completed in 1859, was the largest of the new market houses and was constructed using scraps from the razed market sheds. The two markets contained nine block-long aisles lined by stalls that rented for prices ranging from around $14 to $125 a month. Description: Originally part of a McAllister scrapbook of Civil War miscellanies., Trimmed., Patriotic print, possibly a poster illustration, containing a central allegorical scene flanked by views of Civil War battlefields. Central scene shows men of all eras and trades, including a sailor with an American flag, raising their arms in salute to the Temple of Liberty elevated upon a rock in the background. Other figures include a farmer with a sickle, a veteran of the American Revolution, and a wagon driver. Also shows boughs of wheat and artisans tools. Battle views show soldiers, including Zouaves, charging, traveling on horseback, and firing a cannon. Variant of print often used as a Civil War envelope design.

Description: Fair certificate containing an ornate border with seven vignettes related to agriculture and horticulture. Vignettes show a small herd of sheep; an iron worker with his assistant at a forge (resembling John Neagle's "Pat Lyon at his Forge"); a group of cattle; the Easton fairgrounds in front of a municipal building; a pair of horses; a locomotive travelling across a bridge away from a complex of manufactories; and a gathering of barn animals. Animals include a pig, chickens, ducks, geese, and a turkey. Border also includes farm produce such as squashes, cherries, grape vines, herbs, and plants in addition to agricultural and farm implements, including a butter churn, rake, hoe, basket, pitcher, pail, sickle, shovel, and an ax. Description: Diploma depicting six vignettes and graphic elements symbolizing agriculture and horticulture separated into distinct scenes by borders designed as trees and foliage. Description: Diploma containing two vignettes and and a dominant scene symbolizing agriculture separated by borders comprised of sheaves of wheat, a shovel, farm produce, and vinery. In the upper right, vignettes depict a farmer reaping his field with a horse-drawn reaper and an industrial view of a train passing a coal breaker factory across from a coal mine in which horse-drawn coal cars arrive and depart. The dominant scene shows a farm with livestock, including a pig, turkeys, chickens, and ducks milling the grounds near a woman milking a cow while farmhands corral cows out of a yard, transport a wagon of hay from a barn, and plow a field. View also shows horses before a pasture of grazing sheep and other homesteads, the Wyoming Monument (erected in 1833 in memory of victims of the Wyoming Massacre 1778), and treescaped hills in the distance. The Luzerne County Agricultural Society was founded in 1858 by persons interested in farming and gardening with the mission "to foster and improve agriculture, horticulture, and the domestic and household arts." Title: East Pennsylvania Agricultural & Mechanical Society
Description: Fair certificate containing an ornate border with vignettes, female allegorical figures, and pictorial elements related to agriculture and horticulture. Vignettes show the Pennsylvania coat of arms (surrounded by flags) and montages of scenes of life on a farm. Farm scenes include a farmhouse; barns; a woman milking a cow; a farmhand settling a horse; piglets suckling on their mother; sheep being corralled; a field being cleared; and farmhands loading a wagon full of hay. Allegorical figures hold a sickle, cornucopia of flowers, a basket of fruit, and the head of a ram that lays near other farm animals. Border also includes cherubs, garlands of vines and flowers, fruit bushes, and displays of farm produce. Two bales of wheat clustered with doves, a bee hive, and gardening tools form another pictorial element. Description: Fair certificate containing an ornate border with seven vignettes related to agriculture and horticulture. Vignettes show a small herd of sheep; a farmer at his plow; a group of cattle; a town hall; a pair of horses; an iron worker with his assistant at a forge (resembling John Neagle's "Pat Lyon at his Forge"); and a gathering of barn animals. Title: Horace Greely, to his farmer friends, one day, said "How needlessly man often labors, use the Enterprise Sprinkler, that is the proper way, and give up the watering pot, neighbors."
Description: Trade card issued during the Columbian Exposition of 1893 advertising Enterprise Mf'g Co. of Pa. "Enterprise Lawn Sprinklers." Contains a scene including a caricaturized depiction of newspaper editor and agrarian reformer Horace Greeley. Shows Greeley demonstrating an Enterprise sprinkler to two farmers on the front lawn of an estate. Also contains a view of the Horticultural Building designed by W.L.B. Jenney. The exposition held in Chicago May 1-October 30, 1898 celebrated the 400th anniversary of Christopher Columbus's arrival in the New World in 1492. It is so constructed that the weight of its revolving parts is removed by the pressure of the water, thus overcoming unnecessary wear. 4th. All parts of the machine are made sufficiently strong for ordinarily rough usage and are interchangeable. 5th. The machine is Tinned and Nickel Plated, and is of very handsome appearance. 7th. [sic] The Sprinklers are finished and boxed complete in our factory and require no skill to put them together. The men in the crowd are attired in blue, red, green, and yellow vests, jackets, shirts and pants. A white-haired older man in the crowd kneels forward with his hands in his knees. His top hat is visible on the ground in front of him. The man near the plow stands with his right leg crossed in front of his left and his left arm bent toward his chest. The Oliver Chilled Plow Works was founded in Mishawaka, Indiana in 1836 by James Oliver. Shortly after, Oliver began operating from a foundry in South Bend, Indiana where he began manufacturing chilled plows.
