Description: Trade card issued during the Columbian Exposition of 1893 advertising Enterprise Mf'g Co. of Pa. "Enterprise Lawn Sprinklers." Contains a scene including a caricaturized depiction of newspaper editor and agrarian reformer Horace Greeley. Shows Greeley demonstrating an Enterprise sprinkler to two farmers on the front lawn of an estate. Also contains a view of the Horticultural Building designed by W.L.B. Jenney. The exposition held in Chicago May 1-October 30, 1898 celebrated the 400th anniversary of Christopher Columbus's arrival in the New World in 1492. Description: Diploma containing two vignettes and and a dominant scene symbolizing agriculture separated by borders comprised of sheaves of wheat, a shovel, farm produce, and vinery. In the upper right, vignettes depict a farmer reaping his field with a horse-drawn reaper and an industrial view of a train passing a coal breaker factory across from a coal mine in which horse-drawn coal cars arrive and depart. The dominant scene shows a farm with livestock, including a pig, turkeys, chickens, and ducks milling the grounds near a woman milking a cow while farmhands corral cows out of a yard, transport a wagon of hay from a barn, and plow a field. View also shows horses before a pasture of grazing sheep and other homesteads, the Wyoming Monument (erected in 1833 in memory of victims of the Wyoming Massacre 1778), and treescaped hills in the distance. Title: Oliver Chilled Plow Works
Description: Racist trade card illustration depicting a group of African American men and women observing an African American man posing while a cow and donkey pull an -Oliver Chilled Plow in a field. A white dog in the foreground walks into a hollow and fallen tree trunk. The women in the crowd are attired in yellow and blue dresses, a red coat, and white and red headwraps. The men in the crowd are attired in blue, red, green, and yellow vests, jackets, shirts and pants. A white-haired older man in the crowd kneels forward with his hands in his knees. His top hat is visible on the ground in front of him. The man near the plow stands with his right leg crossed in front of his left and his left arm bent toward his chest. The Oliver Chilled Plow Works was founded in Mishawaka, Indiana in 1836 by James Oliver. Shortly after, Oliver began operating from a foundry in South Bend, Indiana where he began manufacturing chilled plows. Description: View of the fair buildings and heavily trafficked grounds enclosed by a wood fence. In the foreground, outside of the grounds, pedestrian and street traffic is visible. Horse-drawn carriages and wagons travel in the street near pedestrians, including a woman walking her dog on the sidewalk. Horse-drawn omnibuses arrive at and depart from the multiple entrances to the fair at Fifteenth Street near a Philadelphia & Reading Railroad train arriving at the "Special Station." Within the grounds, visitors stroll on the paths between and enter the several exhibition buildings, including the Main Building (center), Restaurant, House of Public Comfort, Carriage and Wagon House, and Poultry House. Title: East Pennsylvania Agricultural & Mechanical Society
Description: Fair certificate containing an ornate border with vignettes, female allegorical figures, and pictorial elements related to agriculture and horticulture. Vignettes show the Pennsylvania coat of arms (surrounded by flags) and montages of scenes of life on a farm. Farm scenes include a farmhouse; barns; a woman milking a cow; a farmhand settling a horse; piglets suckling on their mother; sheep being corralled; a field being cleared; and farmhands loading a wagon full of hay. Allegorical figures hold a sickle, cornucopia of flowers, a basket of fruit, and the head of a ram that lays near other farm animals. Border also includes cherubs, garlands of vines and flowers, fruit bushes, and displays of farm produce. Two bales of wheat clustered with doves, a bee hive, and gardening tools form another pictorial element. The East Pennsylvania Agricultural & Mechanical Society was established in 1860 in Norristown following a split from the Montgomery County Agricultural Society. Description: Shows the well-attended fair on grounds landscaped with dirt paths and a track, tenanted by tents and sheds adorned with American flags, and enclosed by a white fence. Visitors enter by foot, on horseback, and carriage through an arched opening near the "Ticket Office" as a lone carriage departs through the opposite exit way. Description: Advertisement showing heavy pedestrian and street activity in front of the large, prominent hotel opened in 1826 following the conversion by John Rea of several properties at 419-423 Chestnut Street. Several carriages, including one marked "U.S. Hotel" line up in front of the hotel. A group of men stand near the entranceway as other guests exit doorways and stand on the verandah. Signage for businesses tenanting the lower floor of the eastern section of the hotel is visible. Businesses include M. J. & C. Croll, tailor; G. W. Duffy's, fashionable hat & cap store; Blanchard & Rock, paper hangings. View includes adjacent buildings, including Farmers & Mechanics Bank (425-429) and W. Christie, upholsterer (411). On the sides, vignettes depict tools and products of the book arts and fine arts, a threshing machine, a steam locomotive, and stems of flowers, and a grape vine. At the bottom, a historical scene of Egyptians slaves, in front of the pyramids and under the view of an overseer, cutting wheat with sickles is contrasted to a farmer harvesting his field with a horse-drawn reaper.
