Title: Tamany Fish House, on the Pea Shore, R. Delaware
Description: View showing visitors enjoying the public grounds of the Tamany Pea Shore Fishing Company, a social and sporting club founded by Philadelphia artisans in 1803 on the New Jersey Shore above Camden. People stroll on the veranda of the club house remodeled in 1832 and are visible in the upper-floor windows. The building, reflected in the water, is adorned with a flag and a weather-vane shaped as a fish. The kitchen building stands to the right of the main building. Between the two buildings, two men stand in front of a water pump. Couples stroll and an older man fishes on a wooden pier, to which a rowboat is tied, that stretches from the shore. In the right, a rowboat carrying seven passengers (5 men, 2 women) approaches a boy and a man preparing to fish next to their grounded rowboat on the riverbank. Other guests stroll and greet each other on the shore that is lined with trees. Title: Clark's trademark O.N.T. spool cotton
Description: Trade card promoting Clark Thread Company and depicting a racist caricature of an African American boy fishing with Clark thread. The boy is portrayed with exaggerated facial features and expressions. Shows the boy seated and with his legs straddling a giant spool of thread labeled, "Clark's trademark O.N.T. spool cotton" at the edge of a river. The boy holds a fishing rod across his chest and attempts to break the cotton thread, which he is using as fishing line. He looks at the viewer and says in the vernacular "I reckon dis yere's strong 'nuff suah." He is barefoot and attired in blue pants with red patches at the knees; an orange shirt with ragged sleeves; a green vest; and a brown cap. In the right on the ground at his feet is an orange-labeled canister from which worms escape. In the background is tall grass and the multi-colored horizon. In the foreground, the edge of the spool, the canister, and end of the rod are reflected in the water. The George A. Clark & Brother Company, manufactory of embroidery and sewing thread, was founded in 1863 in Newark, N.J. The firm was renamed Clark & Co. in 1879, and in the 1880s created a six-cord, soft finished thread called "Our New Thread" or "O.N.T." The business merged with J. & P. Coats in 1896, which lead to a series of mergers with fourteen other companies. Description: Stereograph depicting “Uncle Jimmie,” an older African American man knitting the corner edge of a mesh fishing net extended out in front of him from a pole on the porch of a wood cabin. Shows the man, with receding, short, cropped hair, seated, and in profile. He wears a white, long-sleeve, button-down shirt; dark-colored pants; and work shoes. The man, possibly Gullah, uses a flat rule and needle on the edge of the net. Behind the man, in the background, an open door to an entryway with an open window is visible. A vertical beam is also visible in the left of the image. Description: Whimsical publisher's advertisement containing four vignettes in a fanciful border of food imagery surrounding a list of cookbook titles in German and English authored by Marianne Struf and the steward of the Union League, William Vollmer. Vignettes depict three quirky scenes representing agricultural work, hunting, fishing, and fine dining. Also contains a scene depicting four women peeling apples, mincing meat, and baking in a kitchen. Vignettes include an African American man waiter and an African American woman cook. Title: The pious Mr. All-bone, taking leave of his directors previous to his departure for Europe
Description: Cartoon about the Panic of 1857 satirizing the dubious overseas departure of the Bank of Pennsylvania president Thomas Allibone preceding the failure of the financial institution in the fall of 1857. Allibone claimed he departed for Europe for health reasons with the support of the Board of Director. The board later charged he resigned while in debt $200,000 to the bank. Shows the Bank of Pennsylvania board wishing a teary-eye Allibone farewell at the "Steamer Europe Sail" wharf. The board stands on "Bank of Pennsylvania" charters and many sneer and hold handkerchiefs to their faces. To the rear of the group, a white woman "reduced to absolute want" from the bank failure, stands with her children, including a baby at her breast, and asks one of the board members "could you not through your influence, obtain me a situation as housekeeper or school teacher?" The member jeers that his influence is "for his friends" and she should get "some tickets for soup." At the front of the group, the wart-nosed, rotund head of the board, shakes Allibone's hand. He assures the departing president of the entire respect and sympathy for his "good care" of the funds of the "Board, and the Widows, and Orphans." He hopes Allibone will return with "renovated health and strength" as well as a purchased title that includes "Gentleman of the Grand Order of the Rag Mill and the Check Marked Good.", Allibone stands on several sheets of "stock" near his valises. He holds a handkerchief to his face, and carries the book of "Common Prayer" in his coat pocket. He responds that if "a liberal expenditure of THEIR money" restores his health that he will attempt to purchase a title. He also suggests that his well-wisher go to church regularly, keep out of jail, and keep his breeches buttoned up and he "will sail through this crisis with flying colors." In the right, an African American woman peddler holds her nose and states in the vernacular that it is because of the "bad odor of dis paper! won't git much fur dis." Beside her, a white boy fishing at the pier remarks to his wriggling, hooked worm that "yer bound to be catched at last." Also shows an African American man, attired in worn and torn clothing, seated and chewing a stick in front of an overturned barrel while a white cabman races his horse-drawn coach down the street of grocery stores in the background. The driver hollers "Stop him! He owes me 130 dollars for Cab-hire." Groceries advertised include onions, molasses, soft sawder (i.e., blarney), sugar, oil, and vinegar., Artist probably John L.
